UNEMPLOYMENT SUBSIDIES.

GOVERNMENT PAYMENT OF £47,285. BULK OF MONEY TO WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, October 3. Information concerning the advantage that is being taken by local bodies of the Government’s offer of increased subsidies for unemployment relief work was given to Mr D. G. Sullivan (Avon) today by the Minister of Public Works (Mr W. B. Taverner). Mr Sullivan addressed an urgent questi. n to the Minister, who said he could not reply at once, but he later supplied a statement upon the point. This showed that since April 1 the Government had paid £47,285 to local bodies by way of subsidies. The Wellington district was the largest beneficiary, having receive 1 £26,911. Auckland • had received £1277, Christchurch £BBl5, Dunedin £9676, and Invercargill £606. Details of subsidies to local bodies in the Dunedin area were given as follow:—Dunedin City Council £8725, Milton Borough Council £135, Port Chalmers Borough Council £166, Taieri County Council £l5O, West Harbour Borough Council £500; total, £9676. The Forbury Park Trotting Club was granted a permit for a special race meeting. The Government taxes, totalling £3511 14s 3d, were divided equally between the Dunedin City Council and the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and the Trotting Club paid the profits, amounting-'fo' £1669 5s 2d, to the City Council anu the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board in equal proportions. The amount raised for the relief of unemployment by this trotting meeting was there fore £5lBO 19s sd.
