AVERAGE LOSS PER MILE.
AN INSTRUCTIVE COMPARISON. INVERCARGILL, October 5. Illuminating figures showing the average loss per mile on branch lines in the various railway districts in the Dominion were quoted by Mr D. J. Wesney, president of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce. in commenting on the recommendations of the Railway Commission. The figures, which are from the department’s own returns for the year ended March 31. 1930. show that the average loss pei mile on developmental branch linee in thi respective districts were as follows:— Auckland £1295 Poverty Bay 758 Taranaki 910 Hawke’s Bay .. .. 822 Wairarapa 618 Nelson-Marlborough .... 646 Canterbury 340 West Coast 642 Otago 536 Southland 353 The average loss per mite was £1093 in the North Island and £465 in the South Island.
