DUNEDIN GARDENING CLUB.

The Dunedin Gardening Club held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. Mr I‘. H. Hollingworth presided, and introduced the lecturer for the evening (Air F S. Perrett), the subject being “ Florai Decorations.

Air Perrett, in opening the subject, drew attention to the value of flowers in the cottage, mansion, sickroom, or hall, and the pleasure derived from them. Very few people, he said, did not love flowers. In arranging flowers it was better to use their own foliage, if possible, and make them attractive, striking, warm, and natural looking. It was not necessary to have maidenhair fern or asparagus for most flowers. What should be aimed at was to use common flowers and foliage. There was ample scope amongst these “to obtain . excellent results. In decorative tables it was necessary to have a ground work to harmonise with the decorative portion. Air Perrett urged competitors to break away from the usual schemes seen at the shows and to think out new ones. There was too much of a sameness year after year. He illustrated some new ideas, and gave a largeTist of flowers suitable for colour schemes. He also gave advice to exhibitors on arranging their flowers in readiness for putting them up on show days, and advised them generally how to proceed. At the conclusion of his address a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the speaker on the motion of Airs Orr Campbell. A competition was held for the best bowl of spring flowers, which resulted in Airs F. H. Hollingworth obtaining first prize and Airs Orr Campbell second. For the best vase, Airs Orr Campbell obtained first prize and Airs F. H Hollingworth second.
