According to the Illustrated London News of September 13, 1851, bloomers were first introduced by women in that year. An article on the interesting event states: For several days past three youn°and beautiful women have astonished the natives of Brampton Square and its neighbourhood by appearing in bloomers. The bloomers were exceedingly full at the knee, but tight from thence to the ankle, where they were drawn close. The hose was beautifully chevined, and they wore patent leather half-ankle shoes, with silver buckles and brilliants. The three had handbills addresses to mothers, wives and daughters, inviting them to join the Association of Bloomers, founded near Fitzroy Square.
