STOWAWAYS SENTENCED.
HARD TIMES IN AUSTRALIA. CHRISTCHURCH, September 24. Two stowaways from Australia, George Henry Wood and John Herbert Lyoirr ■were each sentenced to' a month’s imprisonment in the Lyttelton Court this morning. Asked if they had anything to say, Wood stated that he had been up against it in Australia for the last 18 months He had a family to support, and had to make an endeavour to obtain work. Lyon stated that there were thousands in Australia -"tramping the country and going into the bush. These men were practically without shoes and clothes and were starving. “And before letting myself go down to that, I decided to give New Zealand a trial.” he added.
