ASSOCIATION.

HOME FOOTBALL RESULTS.

The results of matches played on September 6 and 13 in Great Britain are as follow:—

OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND. ,

The closing fixtures for the 1930 seasoq provided local followers of Association football on Saturday with an exciting finish, two games taking place at Logan Park before an attendance of 300 spectators. 'Despite the, rain overnight and the heavy shower shortly after mid-day, the playing area was in good condition apart from a few slippery patches. In the first game an Otago eleven won comfortably in the return representative match with Southland by four goals to nil. The local side displayed -better all-round football, being faster on the ball, and the fact that only four goals were scored was due to the remarkably fine goalkeeping of B. Drysdale, the Southland goalkeeper, who displayed good judgment and coolness iq repulsing many attacks. SOUTHLAND v. OTAGO. In the representative game between Southland and Otago the teams lined out as follows: — Southland.—B. Drysdale, Maxwell, A, Wilson, A. Batchelor (captain), H. Campr bell, C. Drysdale, Devon, Rudolph, Paul, J. M’Murto, J. Morrison. Otago.—Holden, Coates, Taylor, Baird, Perry, Thompson, Ives, Oliver, Witchall, M’Hugh (captain), O’Rourke. Otago won the toss and Southland kicked off towards the town end. In the early .stages of the play Southland was slow to settle down, and, with the local players displaying good team work, the visitors were kept on the defensive. Baird and Witchall, however, both failed with shots, and Maxwell, the Southland right full-back, who was defending well, sent play to his left wing. Morrison made play for Paul to test Holden, the Otago goat* keeper, without success. The Southland backs were effective in checking the attacks of Ives. Witchall, and O’Rourke, and again sent the left-wing on attack, Holden having twice to clear shots from Morrison on the wing. Ives was proving effective in breaking through the visitors’ defence, and, following a cross which travelled across the goal mouth, Witchall failed to connect with the ball and lost a great chance. Morrison and Paul were again prominent when a shot by the latter hit the upright, but offside brought relief to Otago. Following a fine clearance by Drysdale from O’Rourke, Batchelor opened up a Southland advance which Taylor repulsed. Good passing between the Otago forwards saw Maxwell again defending well. but Witchall passed back for M’Hugh to send in a low drive, from which Drysdale made a'fine save. Southland’s attacks were more dangerous on the left, and on two occasions Holden was called upon to clear his lines. Up and down play marked the closing : stages of the spell, Drysdale, the visitors’ goalkeeper, distinguished himself on more than one occasion by fine clearances, but just on time Otago secured a corner kick which was well taken by Ives and enabled Witchall to score with a header. The spell ended with Otago leading by one goal to nil;.-: On resumption in the second half play was of an even nature, with Otago showing a slight superiority both in tactics and passing. M’Hugh made a break-away, only to have his shot returned by Drysdale, but following a further advance, Witchall gave the goalkeeper no chance, making the score, Otago 2 goals, Southland nil. The visitors’ attacks lacked combination, and Coates and Taylor had no difficulty in checking the individual efforts of the forwards. Witchall, cutting in at a fast pace, left the opposing backs standing. Drysdale. however, stoppped the shot, and. following a melee, M’Hugh headed the ball into the net. The goal, however, was not allowed on account of offside play. Campbell changed the position of play by slipping the ball up to Drysdale, a likely-looking attack being spoil by Paul’s getting offside. Again' the Southland left wing came through. Morrison, displaying neat footwork, tricked the defence, but Holden Cleared the shot by punching out. Coates, with a strong kick, put Otago on attack, Drysdale, in goal, making a couple of fine saves, first from M’Hugh and then from Witchall. Following up and down play, Oliver placed a high shot into the net. Otago 3 goals, Southland nil. The visitors were battling hard, and Devon, on the right, had a scoring chance, but Holden cleared safely, and Thompson, Otago’s left half, secured possession. Taking the ball up field, he drew the defence, and gave M‘Hugh a fine opening from which the latter scored, giving Drysdale no chance of saving. Otago 4 goals, Southland nil. For the rest of the spell Otago held the upper hand, but Drysdale continued to clear well in goal, and no further scores resulted. The final whistle went with the score:— Otago .. .. .. .. 4 goals. Southland .. .... Nil. Mr F. G. Smith was the referee. In the first game between the provinces, played at Invercargill earlier in the season, Otago won by 8 goals to 2.

THE LOCAL PREMIERSHIP.

DRAMATIC FINAL. The greatest interest on Saturday was displayed in the second game played between Seacliff and Mosgiel, which marked the final in the local premiership competition. From the start both teams set a hard pace, and with the players fighting every inch o£ the way the interest of the onlookers was maintained right up to the finish. Although Mosgiel won by the only goal scored in the match, the team was lucky on the run of the play, as Seacliff was always the more dangerous bn attack throughout, but M'Dougall, the Mosgiel goal-keeper, by a wonderful display, proved the undoing of the Seacliff side, and never once failed to clear his goal effectively, although bombarded by some hard shots from Hooper, Simmonds, and M'Cormack. To win the premiership Seacliff only required to draw with Mosgiel, but the result of the game leaves Seacliff equal with Technical, and, as there is no likelihood of a play off taking place owing to a ground not being available, these teams will share the honour of premiership, which carries with it the Tight to hold the Fletcher Cup until the following season.

Mosgiel set the ball rolling, playing towards the butts, and play moved rapidly trom end. to end. A combined run by the Mosgiel forwards on _ the right saw Watson stop the ball dead in front of his goal. He was lucky to effect a clearance. A free kick to Seacliff was sent well down to M'Lean, who neatly tricked the backs and just missed with a swerving shot. M'Cloy was instrumental in repelling a further attack, but Gorrie on the right failed with his pass to the centre, and Anderson went down the field to shoot past Mosgiel’s goal. Seacliff was unsteady, and Mosgiel forced a corner kick without advantage. Anderson transferred to Hooper, who along with Simmonds raided Mosgiel’s goal, where M'Dougall brought off a good save by a well-timed punch. Skinner, at insideleft for Mosgiel, was putting in some good work. A fine placed cross went to Gorrie in front of the goal, but the latter kicked the ball against Jackson’s leg and missed a great scoring chance.. Hooper, with a characetristic run, went throughpn his own. but M'Dougall cleared sufficiently to allow Trevathan to kick out. From a free kick Simmonds drove the ball hard to goal, M'Dougall again fielding and clearing the ball with precision. Play was. hard and keenly contested, Porter being outstanding at centre-half for Mosgiel and Anderson for Seacliff From a throw-in at midfield, Baillie slipped the ball down the line to M'Lean. The winger placed nicely for Hooper, pnd a shot by the latter hit the crossbar, Porter clearing from the rebound. M'Lean followed with a high curling shot, which M'Dougall did well to save, and shortly after from a breakaway by Hooper, M'Dougall came out of goal in time to . deflect the Hospital’s centre phot outside. Seacliff was having the advantage at this stage, but M'Dougall proved the stumbling block, shots being well saved from Hooper and M'Cormack. (Seacliff kept up the pressure for the remaining few minutes of the spell, and appeared likely to score at any time, but Dalziel, the Mosgiel righ-half, was very effective in checking the play of M'Cormack and M'Lean. With Porter and M'Cloy also displaying a solid defence M'Dougall had only one call made upon him, when Morris had -an unsuccessful drive at goal. The spell ended without any score being registered. Seacliff forced a corner kick immedi-

ately play was resumed. The cross was cleared, and the Mosgiel forwards came down in a line. Taylor’s pass went astray, and Rogers took the ball up field. He passed to M'Laughlan, but the winger shot outside. M'Dougall once again saved bis side, when Hooper smartly deflected the ball goalwards from a cross by M'Laughlan. Mosgiel’s placing was not up to the mark, and Morris seized on a opening to test M'Dougall, who turned the ball over the bar for a resultless corner. M'Cloy was responsible in changing the position of play, Dalziel following with a clever run, which ended in a goal kick. White and Gorrie initiated an advance, but Rogers, who . had been playing a Bound game at right-half, repelled the movement, sending the ball across to the left. Neat play followed between Simmonds and Hooper, a shot by the latter finding M'Dougall at his best. From the clearance Mosgiel set up a determined attack. Jackson held Gorrie’s shot, but was tackled with the ball' and lost it. C. Skinner, coming up, drove the ball into the open goal amidst wild cheering from the spectators. Mosgiel, 1 goal; Seacliff, nil. Rain fell at this stage, but play continued at a fast pace, Mosgiel playing with more confidence. Watson just managed to clear from Skinner in front of goal, and Morris sent Simmonds away, the attack failing through Hooper’s getting offside. Rogers, who was playing a great game, sent M'Laughlan away on the right, M'Dougall saving by coming out. Mosgiel replied by way of the left wing, Watson being pulled up for hands. Porter kicked too hard, a goal kick resulting, but Mosgiel returned to the attack, Jackson saving a weak shot from Taylor. Seacliff’s goal had a further escape when Skinner hit the upright with a shot, the rebound going to Taylor, who forced Jackson to concede a corner to eave. The kick across was cleared, and Seacliff, by long kicks, pressed, M'Lean nullifying the effort through offside play. Simmonds and Hooper were the only two forwards to trouble the Mosgiel defence in the last few minutes of the game, both testing M'Dougall without success. The game, controlled by Mr W. P. Smith, ended: — Mosgiel 1 goal. Seacliff Nil. THE LOCAL PREMIERSHIP. The following table gives the relative positions of the teams in the First Grade competition:—

(reports the Wellington Dominion). His flagship; H.M.S. Dunedin, has just completed an extensive cruise round the South Island, having visited Lyttelton, Tiinaru, Dunedin, Bluff, and Nelson. The West* Coast Sounds were fully explored on the passage from Bluff to Nelson, and wonderful weather was experienced. The commodore, who has visited the Norwegian fiords, gave it as his opinion that they could not compare in grandeur and beauty with the marvellous coast and sounds lying between Preservation Inlet and Milford Sound. The weather was so clear that Mount Cook remained in sight at a distance of 112 miles.
