WEEKLY MARKET REPORTS Burnside, September 24. Fat Cattle.—Another large entry of 258 head was yarded. The fat cattle forwabd this week were of very good quality, there being a large number of extra well finished and heavy weight bullocks, with a smaller proportion of unfinished sorts than of late. Heifers and cows were not numerous, but the quality of these was also much above the average. The number forward proved in excess of requirements, and prices can be quoted as being down from last week by £1 a head for all prime bullocks, whilst light weight cattle depreciated from 10s to 15s a head. Extra prime bullocks made to £23 15s; prime bullocks £lB to £l9 12s 6d; mediumbullocks, £l5 10s to £l7 15s; light and unfinished, £ll 10s to £l4; prime cows and heifers, £l3 to £l5; medium heifers, £ll to £l2 10s; old and inferior, £9 10s to £lO 10s.-«-—New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., sold: For a southern client, 1 bullock £23 156, 2 £2l 17s 6d, 2 £2l 10s. 2 £2O; J. Fat Sheep.—A total of 1903 fame forward for to-day’s market, comprised mainly of good to prime wethers, with a fair sprinkling of Central Otago light halibred wethers. The proportion of ewes was not large, but the quality of these was good. Competition was not at any time very spirited, and prices at the opening of the sale were easier than last week by Is a head for all butchers’ wethers and ewes, whilst light-weight sheep showed little material change. After the first race wae sold the drop became more pronounced, and finished, at from Is 6d tb 2s per head cheaper than late rates for all butchers’ sheep, with light-weights a shade easier. LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE. INVERCARGILL, September 23. At the weekly sale of Lorneville to-day there was' a considerable easing in the prices for fat sheep, and in some cases vendors appeared to sell at what seemed to be sacrific prices. The fat cattle market provided keen competition, and, as the offering was barely up to local requirements, prices remained firm, and a good sale lias to be reported. Fat Sheep.—The yarding was a heavy one, comprising about 250 more than at last sale. The quality, taken all round, was good, several pens of prime heavy wethers being forward, also a fair quota of good butchers’ ewes. The sale was dull throughout, prices easing considerably compared with those ruling last week Butchers’ requirements were small, and had it not been for the presence of some outside buyers sales would, have been difficult to effect. Even at the low values vendors in most cases seemed prepared co sell, with the result that the bulk of today’s entries was disposed of either at auction- or privately. Medium and unfinished lines suffered to the greatest extent, and in many cases were sold at what appeared to me sacrifice values. Prices were as “follows: —Extra prime heavy wethers, up to 325; medium weights, from 23s to 255; lighter sorts, down to 2(te; extra prime heavy butchers’ ewes, up to 25s 6d; medium weights, from 18s to 22s 6d; lighter sorts down to 10s 6d. Prime lambs sold up to 17s 6d. Fat Cattle. —The yarding was a very light one, being about a little lees than half of the previous week’s. Some good quality beef was forward, both in steers and in cows and heifers. The sale opened -firm at last week’s rates, and throughout competition was keen, the supply being barely up to local requirements. Prices may be quoted as: Extra prime heavy billlocks, up to £l9; medium weights, from

£ll 10s to £l4 10s; lighter sorts, down to £lO 10s;- prime heavy cows, up to £l2;. medium, from £8 10s to £lO 10s; lighter,’ down to £7 10s; prime heavy heifers, up' to £ll 15s; medium, from £9 to £11;’ lighter, from £7 10s. Store Sheep.—Ths main entry in this, section was _ a line of two-tooth ewee, medium, in size and condition, which passed in at £1 6s. A similar pen ofinterior two-tootbs was disposed of at' 15s, whilst a pen of aged and inferior ewes realised 4s Bd. These prices were, similar to those obtainable at country; sales.

Store Cattle.—This yarding was a very, i epresentative one. A line of 40 rising, two-year-old epeyed heifers provided thel main attraction, the balance of the ing consisting of empty cows and a few, mixed yearlings, and two-year-old steers, lhe demand was not bright, and the two-1 year-old heifers, which were of mixed colours . and not too well grown, wcrel passed in at £5 15s. Good fresh-condi-tioned empty cows realised, from £5 10s to £6 ss, with medium sorts from £4 to, £4 15s. Two-year-old steers of medium quality made up to £6 ss, with yearlings' of poor quality at £2 10s. There was a small yarding in the dairy, section, and it included nothing of out-i standing quality. The demand was quite; good, with medium sorts making fron( £7 10s to £9, and late calvers from £5 to £6 10s.

CANTERBURY MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 23. Business on the local grain and proi duee markets is still extremely quiet, small lots of potatoes and a little chaff being practically all that farmers have to sell. The present is generally looked upon as what is termed the “ dead season ’ of the year. Last week there were shipped from Lyttelton 10,566 sacks of potatoes for Auckland, 2659 for Wellington, 1355 for Napier and Gisborne, and 951 for the west coast of the North Island. Yester? day the potato market was a little easier than it was at the week-end, but nominally the value was quoted at n'i? on rt On . Brocke, for immediate delivery. The Waimarino was expected to leave Lyttelton last night with approximately 4000 sacks for Auckland. She had on board 2881 sacks from Timaru. The Wingatui arrived at Auckland on Fri? day last with 9000 sacks. The Karetq will be the last boat this month to take potatoes from Lyttelton for Auckland. Most over-sellers have now covered their lequirements, and the season is nearly finished

There is very little demand for see 4 potatoes, but this does not indicate any-: thing, as many growers do not come oq the market for seed, but exchange witty one another. SHEEPSKIN SALE. SOUTHLAND ’ STOCK REPORT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ‘ IN VERCARGILL,. September 27. The stock market still ■ continues fairly quiet, with increased yardings in all classes during the past week. Fat cattle have been coming forward in larger numbers, the quality of which taken on the whole has been good; and values remain firm. Fat sheep are offering freely and the yardinge still comprise a large percentage of ewes, which' continue to make good prices when compared with those rilling for wethers. The yardings of store sheep have been rather bigger than for some weeks, the bulk of the offerings being hoggets of both sexes for which the market is very easy, and the same may be said in reference to breeding ewes. Store cattle are selling .well, both for young cattle and: also for older wellbred bullocks and heifers. These ■ are on the basis of 3s 8d for A’s. f.0.b., s.i., but ever lower bids than this figure have been made. In some instances offers have been made by nothern sellers at 3s 7-Jd. Local value to growers, is, namely. 3s per bushel on trucks, sacks extra, while the parity of the above figures is about--2s 9Jd.- Duns are in demand, but stocks are at. low ebb, the values of these are approximately 4s 6d, f.0.b., s.i., much however, depending on the character of the oats. _ .
