SHIPMENT FOR CANADA.

.NIAGARA’S RACE AGAINST TIME.

AUCKLAND, September 23. The possibility of a race against time to unload a large shipment of New Zealand butter on the Canadian market before the operation of the increased duty gives special interest to the present trip of the Niagara, which sailed from Auckland for Vancouver ‘to-night. The Niagara, which is carrying approximately 50,000 boxes of butter, is due at Vancouver on October 10, t-wo days before the operation of the higher duty on New Zealand butter. Owing to wet weather on Monday loading operations at Auckland were delayed, and the Niagara, which ■was scheduled to sail at 3 o’clock to-day, did not leave until 10.30 p.m. However, under ordinary conditions this time will be picked up during the voyage. The Niagara, is expected to reach Vancou -r on the morning of October 10, and the Canadian Customs Office, it is understood, has insisted that all documents connecied •with the consignment must be handed in before noon on October 11. Although no trouble is anticipated should a satisfactory trip be made, nothing his been left to chance, and arrangements have been made -with the Union Steam Ship Company that in case of delay the whole of the consignment will be unloaded at Victoria, a port on Vancouver Island, just south of Vancouver, and the docm ments will be conveyed by air mail to Vancouver. This arrangement will not involve any additional expense, and considerable time will be saved if it becomes a matter of hours. As the Niagara’s shipment will be the last to arrive in Canada before the application of the new tariff exporters increased their shipment's, and .the consignment is a record one to Canada for the present time of the year.
