CAUGHT IN A STORM

FRENCH FISHING FLEET.

_ SEVERAL SMACKS MISSING. PARIS, September 23. It is believed that one of the greatest tragedies of the sea has overtaken 500 Brittany fishing smacks, of which there has been no news since a storm broke two days ago.

To-day the relatives are waiting fearfully on the pjeturesque quays of the little port of Concarneau, from which they observed some of the abandoned smacks adrift.

Destroyers are searching for the missing fleet, but so far there is no news.

PATHETIC SCENES ON SHORE.

LONDON, September 23 A message from Concarneau states that many of the boats, fearfully battered, continue to return to port. There are pathetic scenes, as the women scan the crews for their husbands or sons. So far 50 boats are still missing. Eighteen persons are known to be drowned from Concarneau and 30 from Lorient, but it is feared that the total will be much greater.

THIRTY-SEVEN MEN MISSING. PARIS, September 24. So far, it is known that 37 fishermen have perished in the gale. Twenty of these came from Concarneau, and 15 from Lorient. Many vessels' are still missing.
