ASTRONOMICAL NOTES FOR OCTOBER, 1930.

THE SUN. The sun's path during the month of October will be in R.A. from 12.27.51 to 14.19.58, and in- south declination from 3.0.38 to 13.58.12. It will be in longitude from 187.34.58 to 217.20.44. A total eclipse of the sun, visible, however, in New Zealand only as a partial eclipse, takes place on October 22. The path of totality is a narrow belt across the Pacific, north of New Zealand. The eclipse commences at 8.33 a.m. and ends two hours later. THE MOON. The phases of the moon will be as under: — Full moon .. .. Blh 6.26 a.m. Last quarter .. 15th 4.42 p.m. New moon .... 22nd 9.18 a.m. First quarter .. 29th 8.52 p.m. Apogee 3rd 8.24 p.m. Perigee 19th 7.12 p.m. Apogee 31st 1.48 p.m, THE PLANETS.

Mercury will be in R.A. from 11.31.18 to 14.4.56, and in declination from 3.16.5 north to 11.45.12 south. It will be at its greatest elongation on the 7th, and will be in conjunction with the moon on the 21st.

Venus will be in R.A. from 15.14.45 to 16.17.47, and in south declination from 22.45.13 to 27.16.14. It will be at its greatest brilliancy on the 18th, and will be in conjunction with the moon on the 25th. Mars will be in R.A. from 7.27.38 to 8.30.42, and in north declination from 22.40.3 to 20.28.12. It will be in conjunction with the moon on the 16th. Jupiter will be in R.A. from 7.19.15 .to 7.28.21. and in north declination from 22.8.44 to 21.53.59. It will be in conjunction with the moon on the 15th. Saturn will be in R.A. from 18.24.28 to 18.31.53, and in south declination from 22.49.28 to 22.48.3. It will be in conjunction with the moon on the 27th.

Uranus will be in conjunction with the moon on the Bth, and Neptune will be in conjunction with the moon on the 18th.
