AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS.

RESULTS OF SEMI-FINAES.

SLOAN MORPETH BEATEN. MELBOURNE, September 17. The semi-finals of' the Australian amateur and professional golf championships were played to-day. In the amateur section Russell defeated Edgar 9 and 7, and Hattersley beat Sloan Morpeth at the thirty-eighth. In the professional class Stewart beat Naismith 10 and 8, and Robertson beat Fowler 10 and 8.

THE DEFEAT OR MORPETH. MELBOURNE, September 17. The main interest in the golf tournament centred in the amateur match between Morpeth and Hattersley, the 22-year-old Sydney player. The latter trailed the ex-New Zealander all day, and the first time he got in front was when he ran down a 23 ft putt for a birdie two at the final hole to win the match.

In the morning Morpeth putted brilliantly, and mainly owing to that he had great figures, going out in 34, to be three up at the end of the round. Hattersley got even at the twenty-seventh, when he holed a long put. At the thirty-second a sensational smite by Hattersley sent the ball 300 yards from the tee, and it landed on the edge of the bunker. He chipped out beautifully and holed a 23footer. The following four holes were desperately fought for and were halved. In the two extra holes Morpeth recovered brilliantly, but Hattersley’s long putt decided the match. Hattersley is the biggest hitter in the game in Australia to-day.

THE NEW CHAMPIONS. MELBOURNE, September 18.

The final matches for the amateur and professional golf championships of Australia were played to-day in perfect weather.

H. W. Hattersley, of New South Wales, by beating Alexander Russell, of Victoria, 3 and 1, became amateur champion. J. Robertson, of Tasmania, by defeating Rufus Stewart, of South Australia, 2 and 1, carried off the professional title. Hattersley, who won the first four holes in this afternoon's play, provided thrills by driving 280 and 282 yards at the twenty-fifth and twenty-seventh holes. He was 2 up at the turn, and he Iso won the next hole. Russell, by slicing badly from the thirty-fifth tee, killed any chance he had. Hattersley sank a ten-footer to take the hole and win the match

In the professional contest, after oeing three down at the twenty-third in the afternoon, Robertson, with a 12-foot putt, was one do n at the twenty-eighth. Then, playing excellently, he equalled and went ahead for the first time since the fourteenth hole. Stewart missed a two-foot putt at the thirty-fifth, and Robertson won the championship.

The game finished at the thirteenth hole, experience prevailing against the younger player. The Dannevirke Handicap Challenge Cup final was won bv G. Broadhead (Wanganui), who defeated F. Bullick (Dannevirke), 7 and 5. OTAGO CLUB. A medal match was played by the Otago Golf Club on the Balmacewen links on Tuesday. The best scores were: A Grade.—Miss D. A Canadian foursome bogey competition was played on Balmacewen links on Saturday afternoon. .Heavy rain set in shortly after the first pairs had started, and continued throughout the afternoon, but this did not deter 2S pairs from competing, although all or these did not finish the round. The competition resulted in a tie between six pairs with scores of three down. The following were the couples who tied:—R. Dick and R. E. Hayward (handicap 5), J. Spence and H. J. Grayson (6), C. T. Irvine and A. N. Haggitt (5), J. C. Shand and J. W. Smeaton (10), J. R. Laidlaw and P. W. Clarkson (11), D. A. Solomon and C. S. Shuttleworth (12). In this foursome competition both players play tee shots, and the better shot is selected to continue the play of the hole, and this often leads to controversy as to which ball should be selected. At the tenth hole on Saturday there was at least no question in the pair composed of A. N. Haggitt and C. T. Irvine, as Irvine holed out with his tee shot and is now entitled to member? ship of “The Hole-in-one Club.” ST. CLAIR CLUB. The final of the knock-out competition for the Paterson Cup, played over the week-end, was won by W. Clayton, whq defeated F. Sherriff 'by 4 up and 2 tq play.
