Mrs C Speight. Mr Colin Speight, and Miss "Winnie Speight left by the second express on Thursday to join the Rangitiki in Wellington en route for England.

Many relatives and friends assembled at the Railway Station on Thursday morning to wish bon voyage to Miss F. Rattray and Miss L. Tolmie, who left for England, travelling by the Rangitiki via Panama.

Admiral Byrd was given an enthusiastic-send-off at the station on Thursday morning, greeted with cheers and the singing of "For He’s a Jolly Good bellow, showered with confetti, and presented with an exquisite bouquet by the Mayoress Mrs R. S. Black.

Very large audiences have assembled during the week to witness the talking film “ Disraeli,” which the management of the newly remodelled Princess Theatre chose as its opening attraction. It is quite the best thing of its kind that has been presented here.

An enjoyable morning tea was given at the Tudor Hall by Mrs Marshall Macdonald. as a farewell to Mrs Ji P. MacGowan. at which the guests included Alesdames d’Arcy Haggitt, C. Reid. H. Guthrie, Milne, and Oldham, and Misses Nicolson and S. Shand.

On Wednesday morning a delightful little tea was given by Miss Belle Al'Laren for Miss F. Rattray and Miss Tolmie at the Tudor Hall, at which the guests included Mesdames B. C. Haggitt, Laidlaw, Menlove (Athol), F. Fitchett, and R. Ritchie, and Misses Neill and C. Williams.

Dr and Mrs Stuart Moore gave a delightful party at their residence, Selkirk street, Roslyn, the concluding function for the New Zealand Masseurs Dominion Conference. Games, _ musical items, and original and quaint competitions were entered into with zest. Delegates from the different centres of the Dominion were present, also Misses Tennent, Hare, Downes, Gilkison (Wellington), Rad-cliffe-Taylor, Crowley, and Stenhouse.

The fifteenth anniversary of Anzac Day was commemorated in perfect autumn weather, and the Queen’s Gardens and surrounding streets were thronged with people for the brief service. Later at the Town Hall the seating accommodation was cpiite insufficient, and a wireless installation in the Concert Chamber enabled hundreds to listen to an eloquent address by Mr Frank Milner, rector of the Wai•taki Boys’ High School.

The'final effort to raise funds for the endowment of the chair of obstetrics is the Savoy grand ball, to be held under the patronage of the dean of the medical faculty, Sir Lindo Ferguson, and Lady Ferguson. The committee is greatly indebted to Mr and Mrs Barling, who have placed the whole of the Savoy at their disposal. The staff has generously donated "their service, and the ball promises to be a brilliant social event.

Miss Frances Rattray and Miss Tolmie have been entertained at many parties prior to their trip to England. On Tuesday Mrs R. C. Haggitt was hostess at a pleasant little tea at the Tudor Hall of

the Savoy. The colour scheme in the decorations is particularly beautiful, the charming French linen in brilliant yellow with broad stripes of green and scarlet and the crystal vases containing all shades of African and French marigolds on the tables, with a profusion of feathery golden rod in brown and green bowls, and brass bowls of chrysanthemums in the background making a charming picture which was greatly appreciated. The guests included Lady Williams, Mesdames Paton Dunlop, Shennan, Macandrew, Gallaway, W. Sinclair, and Laidlaw, and Misses Menlove, Cutten, Cargill, and L. McLaren.

A large number of people attended the High School Jubilee garden party held in the Girls’ School grounds yesterday afternoon. Afternoon tea was served from a large marquee, and the Boys’ High School Band added greatly to the enjoyment of the afternoon with spirited music.

The Timaru High Schools’ jubilee celebrations commenced on Saturday night, when a reunion of past pupils of the Girls’ School was held in the school hall. Quite a number of ex-pupils from ail parts of New Zealand were present, and a most enjoyable time was spent in renewing acquaintances and in chatting over old days. The large hall, which was turned into a reception room, yvas decorated with large bowls of greenery and grasses, and tall vases of cosmos added a bright touch of colour. In the supper room pink and red roses and asparagus fern were the chief decorations. The guests were welcomed by Mrs Kemshed. president of the Old Girls’ Association During the evening competitions were played, and a most enjoyable musical programme was given by Mrs H. W. Hall. CHRISTCHURCH, April 25. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was opened at Riccarton on Easter Alonday. The weather wa.4 fine, but dull and cold, and the attendance, which included visitors from all parts of New Zealand, was larger than ever. Autumn colourings formed the prevailing note among the toilets seen on the lawn, and many and charming were the variations of browns, fawns, and golds. Alany charming toilets of the latest shade of bottle green, and blue, in the fashionable marine shade, struck a colourful note. As regards hats, the' ever popular felt was almost universal, many of them being worn turned back off the face. Airs H. A. Knight, wife of the chairman, wore a smart suit of blue and grey flecked tweed, with fur collar, and a marine blue felt hat. Airs J. Woodhouse, her daughter, wore a beige and mole checked coat with mole collar, over a fawn and red checked suit, and a red felt hat. On Alonday- night the-Christchurch Polo Club held its annual ball in the Winter Garden, and, as in previous years, it was a great success. There were three debutantes; Aliss Patty Grigg, second daughter of Air and Airs Edward Grigg, of Blenheim, who wore a soft white satin frock embroidered with diamante, with tiered skirt longer at the sides, and narrow panels from the shoulders caught with a brilliant buckle:-Aliss Sally Newton, second daughter of Air and Airs E. Newton, “The Willows,” Ashburton, who wore an attractive frock of silver lame with flounced skirt- of fish-net; and Aliss Christobel Bowen, daughter of Airs Gerald Bowen, Christchurch, who wore a very pretty frock of ivory lace and tulle mounted on primrose crepe de chine. BLENHEIM. April 24. The Marlborough Rugby Union opened its new grounds, named Lansdowne Park, on Monday afternoon, under ideal weather conditions. There was a very large assemblage of football enthusiasts, and of the general public. Standing in the front row of the grandstand, the president of the union, Mr C. H. Mills, delivered an excellent speech, followed by cheering for Mr and Mrs G. F. Watts, of Lansdowne Station. The member for Wairau, Mr E. F. Healy, then addressed the assemblage and declared the grounds open for play, and, on behalf of the Marlborough Rugby Union, presented Mrs G.

F. Watts with a gold key. and asked her kindly to open the grandstand. WELLINGTON, April 26. The first large party at Government House since the arrival of their Excellencies Lord and Lady Bledisloe was naturally looked forward' to with much interest, and took the form of a reception and investiture, held on Wednesday night., and very largely attended. His Excellency conferred the honour of knighthood on the Hon. Sir Alichael Alyers, with the insignia of Knight Commander of the Order of St. Alichael and St. George. Sir Thomas Sidey was presented with the Royal Letters-patent conferring on him the degree of a Knight Bachelor of the same order. Those invested with the insignia of the C.AI.G. were Air E. W. Kane and Air Robert Parker, both of Wellington, the latter being a veteran musician who is greatly respected. The quaint old-world ceremonies were carried out with much dignity, and were watched with great interest by all the guests. The guests assembled in the large ballroom for the investiture, this .being decorated with beautiful groups of foliage plants, palms, bamboo, and stands of giant chrysanthemums in all colours, the effect being very handsome. The drawing rooms were arranged with flowers and winter foliage very effectively, and in the supper rooms there were large silver bowls of crimson and white flowers, also high silver candelabra, which added much to the appearance of the tables. After the investiture the guests were all received by their Excellencies in the drawing room, Ladv Bledisloe wearing a striking gown of pale lettuce green, with a cuirass bodice of si'ver and crystal embroidered net, the skirt being deeply flounced with net of a deeper shade, slightly trained at the back. Her ornaments were pearls and diamonds, and she carried a white ostrich feather fan. Lady Alyers wore blue chiffon of a soft, dark shade, with pink shoulder posy and pink feather fan; Lady Sidey petunia chiffon velvet, with diamond ornaments; Airs E. W. Kane, white net embroidered in silver and jet, with lines of jet and a wide black sash at one side of the skirt. The Rangimane Croquet Club has just closed down for- the season with a very pleasant afternoon, when competitions weie-'much enjoj-ed. There was a very large attendance of members and friends and t.ie president, in handing over to the club a handsome set of silver table vases paid a tribute to the memory of the late Airs Cook, a veteran player and founder of the club, the vases being given in memory of her. club members to play on, and for many other kindnesses shown to the club. Airs Gosset was the winner of the B competition, with Airs Smedley as runner-up. Airs Suisted and Airs Grant were also prize-winners. The afternoon’s competitions were won by Alesdames Yates, J. Thomson, Suisted, Grant, Flint, Knight-Baker, and Johnson. The club presented Airs Wallace with a handsome cut-glass bow.l, Air Wallace with a leather travelling bag. and Airs Sedgwick with a croquet mallet. The afternoon was a particularly successful one, and much regret was expressed that the season had come to an end.

POVERTY BAY, April 22. Mrs C. Laver, of Ngatapa, has left on a trip to England Mr and Mrs L. T. Burnard arc visiting Wanganui. Mr and Mrs J. B. Mac Ewan, of Wellington, will attend the Kerr—Barker wedding, to take place in Gisborne this week. Mr and Mrs W. J. Kerr, of Scotland, will be in Gisborne for the Kerr—Barker wedding. Mr and Mrs Wilfrid Kohn have returned from Australia, and are at present staying with Mr Kohn's mother, Mrs Mirfield.

Numbers of entertainments have been tendered to Miss Joy Barker prior to her wedding to Mr Nevin Kerr, of Scotland. which takes place this week. This week’s hostesses were Mrs M. L. A quiet and pretty evening wedding was solemnised at Holy Trinity Church, Gisborne when Tui, elder daughter of Mrs and the late Mr H. E. Hill, of Gisborne, was married to Colin Campbell, second son of Mr and Mrs A. Shaw, of Kaiti, Gisborne, by Canon H. Packe. The bride, who was given away by her mother, wore a pretty frock of pink and white floral ninon de soie with full circular skirt falling to peaks at the ankles, and a coatee frilled round the edges. Her hat was of pink felt touched with blue, and she carried a prayer book. Miss Joan Hill (bride’s sister) was bridesmaid, and wore honey-coloured georgette and a felt hat to match. Mrs Hill was attired in black silk mylesta and a hat to match. Mrs Shaw wore black crepe de chine and a black velour hat. and Miss D. Hill (bride’s aunt) black georgette and hat en suite. Mr C. There were large attendances at Ellerslie on both days of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, and the weather being warm with bright sunshine, many smartlycut tailor suits were worn as well as the new model frocks. In some cases coloured shoes were worn to match, and were particularly attractive. Amongst visitors from other parts were Mrs G. S. The lawn tennis championships in connection with the New Zealand Universities’ annual tournament have been taking place during the past few days, and the attendance at Carlaw Park to watch the different matches has been very considerable each day. An excursion down the harbour is to take place as a wind-up to the many pleasant entertainments that have been preferred the visitors to the tournament during their stay in Auckland. Lady Sidey. who arrived from Wellington with Sir Thomas Sidey to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Law Society, has returned to the south. Mrs Lumley Frank, who has been staying with her mother. Mrs Alfred Nathan, in Princes street, for the past few months, is returning to London by the s.s. Rangitiki at the end of the week.
