WAIKOUAITI SHOW.

GOOD ALL-ROUND DISPLAY. The summer show of the Waikouaiti Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on Friday in exceedingly unfavour- . able weather, the society experiencing a cold wet show day for the first time for many years. The sharp thunderstorm which broke shortly before noon was followed by two hours’ almost continual rain and when the skies cleared about midafternoon conditions underfoot were so unpleasant and the atmosphere was so bitterly cold that a great many people must have been dissuaded from venturing out, and the result was one of the poorest attendances on record. The show this year easily measures up to the standard of recent displays as a whole, but some of the sections showed a falling off in the number of entries, although the decline in these cases was more than compensated for by a big increase in the entries received in the home , industries and miscellaneous sections, t The housewives of the district more than , did their duty by the association, with I the result that the total number of entries was quite satisfactory. There was only a fair showing of dairy cattle, but r both heavy and light horses made a better display this yeai l , and there was a very - much improved entry of stud sheep. 3 The arrangements for the day were .blv carried out by the class stewards and . marshals, under the energetic direction of 1 this year’s president (Mr D. J. Ireland), 1 assisted by the secretary (Mr J. W. Tim- > mins). The committee is to be congratu-

lated upon the way in wTiich the programme was carried through under the most trying circumstances. THE CATTLE. The display of dairy cattle was not up to the usual standard at this show. The Waikouaiti and Waihemo counties have in the past few years come to take a keen interest in the breeding of good quality milkers, consequent to a large degree upon the operations of the Waikouaiti Waihemo Herd-testing Association This year, however, there was little evidence of this in the cattle rings, particularly those for Jerseys and Ayrshires, in both of which sections one exhibitor took all the prizes. In the Jersey section the Palmerston breeder, Mr D. Wright, provided all the entries, with the exception of a second prize two-year-old heifer entered by Mr E. II Scott. The cattle were in excellent condition and were well brought out. Mr Wright is just finishing a successful show season which includes honours at Dunedin. Gore, and the Royal Show at Invercargill. Messrs Ireland Bros, encountered no opposition in the Ayrshire section, but the Goodwood cattle more than satisfied the judge. The champion bull was a well setup sire, and the female championship went to a nice-looking cow that has alreadv proved its productive capabilities. In the Friesian section the Goodwood breeder. Mr T. Hewitt, scored many welldeserved successes, but he is likely to find that he has a serious rival for precedence in the matter of black and whites in Mr J. A. Payne, whose team displayed a lot of quality an 1 evidence of good handling. Mi Hewitt scored the male and female’championships with excellent types of the breed, and he also annexed the female reserve champi •!•- ship. The reserve award for bulls went to Mr C. Hal], who, with Mr C. T. M’Calhim (Flag Swamp), provided the entries not forwarded by the two chief prizewinning exhibitors. Mr Hewitt secured

the special trophy for most points in the Friesian section. THE SHEEP. The sheep pens contained an increased number of stud sheep, the improvement being most noticeable in the Corriedale and Southdown sections. Tn the former Messrs Reid and M’Cutcheon and Mr J. A, Payne provided the exhibits. The rams, on the whole, where a fairly good lot, but in respect of the both sexes there was a variation in wool strength which indicated the favouring of widely different types. The ewes were a mixed lot but the representatives of both flocks included some well-made evenly fleeced sorts with the true Corriedale character. Mr Payne’s champion ewe was a useful type of sheep, and he also showed some nice types of youngsters. In the Southdown section Mr J. A Payne was even more prominent, showing some fine types of this breed. He had a nice trio of flock rams, and a commendable bunch of ewes with excellent carcass quality, and a good covering of wool. The breed seems to have become adapted to local conditions quite satisfactorily. Messrs Ireland Bros, were responsible for almost all the Romney Marsh entries. but Mr A. Woods managed to catch the judge’s eye with a good-looking ewe of outstanding character, and covered with a fleece of true Romney wool. The male and female champions stood out as excellent types, but the rest of the entries were only average. The lambs were, on the whole, good. There was the same discouraging lack of competition in the Border Leicester section, Messrs Chisholm Bros., of Goodwood, securing most of the awards unopposed. Miss Diack, however, was represented worthily 7 by some youngsters, with which she annexed one or two awards. The fat sheep were not outstanding, but the lambs were in good order. The crossbred sheep were a good lot, fulfilling quite satisfactorily the requirements stipulated. THE HORSE RINGS. The heavy horse section was an interesting one, and competition was for the most part keen. Honours were fairly evenlydivided among the successful exhibitors being Messrs D Brown, P. Cooper, C. T. Al’Callum, J. Allan, J. A. Payne, C. Hall, ami J. Reid, the last-named distinguishing himself with a very fine string

of Ins well-known geldings. Mr D. Brown secured both the female championships, the entire award going to Mr P. Cooper’s aged stallion and the reserve championship for mares to Air C. Hall. There were good rings of light horses and ponies outstanding features of the section being the classes for light-weight hacks and best paced hack. Mrs T. D. Dalziell s Chrysler won the hark chainpionship and Messrs Al’Ara Bros., of A., ine Hill, showed the champion pony, there was a large contingent of horses from Dunedin, and riders from town were also prominent in the competitions at the close of the day.
