TROTTING.

FIXTURES. January 25.—Wellington. January 25.—Te Arolia. January 30, February I.—Forburv Park February B.—N.Z. Metropolitan. ' February 15.—Wellington. February 22.—Kaikoura. February 22, 24.—Otahuhu. » March I.—Waikato. March 5, 6.—lnvercargill. March B.—Timaru. March 12.— Manawatu. March 15.—New Brighton. March 19.—Wyndham.March 22.—Wellington. March 24.—South Otago. TRACK TALK. By Adonis. THE DUNEDIN CUP. In the list of winners of the Dunedin Cup are found the names of horses who were regarded as champions in their day, prominent among them being that super horse Great Bingen, who led the 1924 field home. Away back in 1912 Dillon Bell, driven by the late Manny Edwards, won in 4.35, figures that stood Until 1922. when Tatsy Ddlon. driven by J. McLennan, touched 4.32 3-5. Two seasons later Great Bingen chipped this to 4.31 2-5. which was bettered by Logan Chief, who stepped 4.29 1-5 the following season (1925), and that record still stands. With the fine field engaged next week, however, and providing the track is in good order, new figures will probably be set. Mr Fogg appears to have made a good job of the adjustments lor next wees, s contest, but as several of the horses engaged will be racing on Saturday at Wellington, and some of them may incur a penalty, the time is not opportune to discuss them in detail. Suffice it to say that in the meantime the favourites are Wrackler, Author Jinks, and Koi L’or. THE GOLD CUP. The M ellington Trotting Club's meetings are steadily growing in importance, and patrons of Hutt Park now sec some of the Dominion’s smartest performers under silk. This will certainly be the case on Saturday in the Gold Cup and the Despatch Handicap, the fields for which inchide several of the best pacers in commission. Ever since the handicaps were declared M rackler lias been a very

sound favourite, and with the brilliant performances of the Wrack pacer at Auckland fresh in mind it is hard to look past him for the winner. Of those on the limit Concbft looks the best. The handsome Australian pacer followed Machine Gun a U \ C i * n Handicap at the Auckland Cup meeting and won impressively over 10 furlongs on the concluding day. Still, it cannot be overlooked that Cundiff has been more or less a disappointment. Alongside of \) raekler on 12yds are two brilliant horses in Dilworth and Dundas Boy, and h they are at their best on the day thev vmll be with the leaders when the whips are out. On 24yds are Quality anil Roi Lor and the latter looks the most likely to force Wrackler to step inside his hamheap. Of those further back. Rader i , s tbc ,- bi »gest appeal, and the il.il Zolock gelding will be going on when some of the others might be feeling the T ,l . c ’. Sslll e It should be a fine contest, in which W rackler, Roi Lor, and Padlock might fight out the finish. TRACING OF PEDIGREES. As all persons interested in the pedigrees of trotting horses are aware the maternal ancestries of the two most important progenitors of recent years. Peter c oo-' ’* eat ' " as au thentieally by Grand C-.BV), run speedily to "said' to be” and ' untraced ’ crosses Isays the Horse Rc/'s a matter of fact, the only tlnng absolutely certain about the dam of either horse is the authenticity of the blood of her sire. Santos, dam of Peter the Great, was authentically by Grand <2.275), was certainly foaled in IBb/, and bred by S. A. Browne, of Kalamazoo, -Michigan. But her dam, a mare known first as Lady Dunean ami then renamed Shadow, for 30 years past has been the subject of prolonged and intricate investigation, of which the results have occupied . unlimited space in the turf press—with the final outcome that to-day we know not a whit more about her that is authentic and beyond dispute than we did when S. A. Browne first put her to bleeding ami had her pedigree (a vague and unvelified one) inserted in his catalogues, and later on in the Trotting Register. Lillian Wilkes (2.175). the dam °? Axworthy. was authentically by Guy M ilkes (2.15.}). was certainly foaled in 1886, and bred by M illiam Corbitt, of San Mateo, California. But her dam. a nun e known as 1-lora Langford, has been under investigation for over 40 years, anil to-day we know not a whit more about her that is authentic anil beyond dispute than we did when William Corbitt first put her to breeding and had her pedigree (a vague and unverified one) inserted in, his catalogues and later on in the Trotting Register. As Guy Axworthy ranks to-day as the greatest extreme speed progenitor in the history of the standard breed, the shortness of his maternal pedigree disturbs many horsemen who consider that so transcendent a stallion should have an ancestry in keeping- with his accomplishments. M hen the breed was young such discrepancies were often repaired by first aid —that is to say. lame facts were pieced out by pleasing fancies, and illustrious, or at least honourable, ancestors, supplied by easy fabrications. Ihe advent of John H. 'Wallace, however, changed all that. His American Trotting Register had the immediate effect of a threshing out of the facts from the fictions and the relegation of the latter to the scrap-heap. This process was attended by outcries, battles, and blood-spilling, for the owners of horses with bogus blood lines resisted with all their might the lopping off of the fancy crosses which looked so well on paper, ami for whicli t-hey also in many cases had paid well. In fact, at one time the trotting horse breeding world was almost rent in twain by the conflict. Prominent breeders and owners threatened Mr Wallace with not only the loss of his register and his reputation. but forced their way into his office and intimated that bodily violence would be his portion. A rival to his great publication, called the Breeders' Trotting Stud Book, was even established and the first volume published, a considerable number of very prominent breeders getting behind it in the determination to " put Wallace out of business.” But the only result was the greater glory of Wallace and his works and their own utter discomfiture. Tn the end they were obliged to crawl back, as it were, with their tails between their legs, ami humbly send in their pedigrees to him for registration in or rejection from his own publications as he saw fit.

In those days Mr Wallace personally conducted all pedigree investigations of moment, for the breed was yet in its swaddling clothes, the motor car was far in the future, almost every man in America was interested in harness horses lor business or pleasure, and co-operation was instant; while, in addition, the number of 2.30 trotters and standard-bred animals in the country was only a small fraction of what later on it came to be. IN SADDLE AND SULKY. Acceptances for the Forbury Park meeting are due on Friday. Wrackeen looks certain to be further back in the handicaps very soon. Tamahine is a very consistent trotter who looks well placed at Wellington. The record for the Dunedin Cup is the 4.29 1-5 that Logan Chief set in 1925. Dipnoi will win another trotters’ race "hen he carries his speed on a level gait. Xgingongingo will be one of the shortestpriced favourites at Wellington on Saturday. Mac Locanda lias a long way to go before he will be as good as his brother, Loeanda Mae. Silverwood, one of P. B. Berry's team, carries every indication of developing into an early winner. A change of stables has not yet resulted in a change of manners as far as Bing Boy is concerned. It is no crime to have a hobby, and the ownership of a good horse cannot be called a bad hobby.

Auditress has disappointed the stable more than once, ami apparently she leaves her best gait on the track.

Tifa, who is on 3.44 in th« Vauxhall Handicap at Forbury Park, won in 3.39 at the Ashburton summer meeting. . More races are lost through lack of judgment on the part of horsemen thau through lack of speed in their mounts. ‘ Arikitoa still requires smartening up at the barrier, and that is why he does not at present appeal in the tighter class sprint races. 1S a Pronounced favourite for the Gold Cup Handicap, and the brilliant H rack pacer is likely to retain that honour until the field is sent on its way.* Nelson M'Elwyn promises to strip a yery fit horse at Forbury Park next week! He has been nominated for-both saddle and harness events.

The Our Thorpe gelding Tennis has been stepping an improved gait, and is shaping like the prospective winner of a race at one of the minor meetings down south. Millie de Oro is a smart filly who may improve on her best form at Forbury I ark next week. She is a four-year-old by Rey de Oro from Mara.

According to reports from the north, Jxatute has been doing good woik for J. Bryce, but most backers will probable feel inclined to wait and see if she has dropped iier flightiness in a race.

Zepp, who is on the front of the saddla event at Waiiio on Saturday, is a likelylooking sort from A. M'Lellan's stable. He is a four-year-old grey, by Drusus from -Mother Machree.

Bonefa will only need to travel on her best gait to be troublesome in the tiolters’ events at the Wellington meeting. Distance does not trouble her, and she is coming to her best racing days. Admiral Bingen will be racing over bis best distance in the Kaitoke Handicap at Wellington on Saturday, and the public will probably give him a call over Tamahine and Writer.

It he reproduces the form he showed in the Great Northern Derby Ngingongingo will go close to winning the Grace-field Handicap at the Wellington meeting. Ho has come on a lot lately.

Providing he hits his straps more quickly than he did at Timaru, Ayrmont Chimes should race prominently at Wel-

lington on Saturday. J. Bryce should not take long to land him a winner.

The John Dillon mare Marvin Dillon, who showed good form at the Winton Jockey Club s meeting, is engaged in the saddle event at Wairio on Saturday, and looks nicely placed on the limit.

Cyone won so well at Timaru that she is sure to be one of the favourites for the Improvers’ Handicap at ’Wellington. She might find Wraekeen one of the hardest horses to beat. Silver Jack, a double-winner at the Vincent meeting. is a five-vear-old gelding by Erin's- King from a Silver Ribbon mare. He is capable of winning again on the country circuit.

Maryin Patch showed a fair turn of speed in his races at the Vincent meeting, but spoilt fair winning chances by travelling on broken gait. The Bon Patch gelding should, however, win at one of the minor meetings.

P. Gallagher, the trainer of that smart pacer Logan Hanlon, provided the winners of three of the four events for pacers and trotters at the Vincent meeting, while his representative in the fourth just missed a win by a head.

.Among the smart improvers in the Probationers’ Handicap is the Ashburtonowned Lydia, who won impressively at the Forbury Park spring meeting. From :i 3.u8 mark she should go a good race, and she is certain to be one of the favourites.

“ Another thing a man finds out after taking his wife to the races ten or twelve years in succession,” says an American exchange, " is that it really doesn't matter whether she understands the rules of l acing or not.”

The Huia Dillon pacer Hilltop, who is engaged at the Wellington meeting, showed good form at the recent Wairarapa meeting. On the second day he won in 4.39 4-5. and so must be regarded as nicely placed, on 4.41 on Saturday.

The promising young trotter Writer is engaged at both the Wellington and the Forbury Park meetings, and on recent form looks certain to gather one of the stakes attached to the events for straightout trotters.

Laracor, who finished second to Free Pointer in the Vincent Trotting Stakes, should improve on that performance. He is a four-year-old by Guy Parrish from Toddy Wilkes, and he carries the same racing jacket as Logan Hanlon. Padlock is on 4.22 in the Gold Cup Handicap, but even at that he cannot be written out. The run lie made in the Champion Handicap at Auckland to get up and dead-heat with Kohara was one of the best ever seen on the course. The smart southern pacer Erin’s For* tune is one of the favourites for the Electric Handicap on the opening day of the Forbury Park meeting, but if Krina reproduces the speed she showed at Timaru and carries it without a break she will go close to winning.

When Mac <le Oro won over a mile and a-half at Ashburton he put 3.25 1-5 against his name (approximately a 4.34 two-mile gait). He will have plenty of supporters from a 4.42 mark in the King George Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting.

At the Winton meeting Tumatakura failed by two lengths to give Erin's Fortune 36yds in the big race. They meet on the same terms again in the King Geoigo Handicap at Forbury Park next week, ami if they both go to the post the Erin’s King pacer will be the more fancied of the two.

Ambition has not had the best of luck in her races, and she will need all she can get if she is to win the Vauxhall Handicap on the opening day of the Forbury Park meeting. Good and all as she is, she will need everything in her favour to gather up White Satin, Hydro, Fifa, Standby, Sunspeck, and others. Tarndale has been doing well since Lift successful holiday campaign, and he will lie at Forbury Park next week, where he will contest the mile saddle events. At the Winton meeting lie gave Cyone 36yds and a beating, and the latter’s subsequent easy wim at Timaru points to the souths ern pacer as one who is likely to wiU again.

Tn framing his adjustments for the Southland Handicap Mr T. Fogg has resorted to the splitting of seconds, a practice that is frowned on by the New Zealand Trotting Association. With the size of the present-day fields in races of this class the placing of horses on differences of 6yds is liable to lead to confusion at the start. In this particular race, however, there is a gap of 12yds or more between all the lines except the first two. On the opening day of the Auckland meeting Tamahine, when in receipt of 36yds from Writer, finished second to Linnet the Great, while C. S. Donald's representative finished outside a place. On the second day there was 12yds less between the pair, and Writer beat Tamahine by two lengths. At Wellington the margin between them is opened up again to 36yds, and they may be found fighting out the finish. One of the best races on the Wellington card should be the Despatch Handicap, for which no fewer than 13 fiigh-elass sprinters have been paid up, including several New Zealand Cup candidates. One of those on the limit is Athalone, who has been showing fine form, and although he is not likely to be favourite there will be plenty of support for him. With Quality and Bessie Logan C. S. Donald holds a strong hand, the latter having shown at Auckland that she has lost none of her speed. Other good brackets are Imprint and Dilworth, and Concliff and Prince Pointer. On the 24yds mark are three brilliant ones in Wrackler, Dundas Boy, and Kingcraft, and if there was a guarantee that the last-named would leave with the field he would be the actual favourite. Several of those in the field are engaged in the big race, and their performances in that event may throw more light on their prospects in the spring but. horses assured of support are tackier, Dundas Boy, and Kingcraft. CANTERBURY DOINGS. I By Observer. The Bieearton tracks have been on the quiet side during the past week. A big batch of horses left for Trentham early last week, while those remaining at home were restricted for a few days to easy work, as a result of the trades being soaked by heavy rain. The next event of interest will be the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, which will attract strong patronage from this end. The four-year-old mare Childsplay was destroyed recently. She was bred bv Sir George Clifford, being by Autumnus‘f rom Helter Skelter, by Antagonist from the ( lanranald mare Fleetfoot. From the time she went into training she showed great speed, and she was an exceptional two-year-old. She started off bv winning the MLean Stakes, while the ‘Wellesley Slakes and the Welcome Stakes followed m quick succession, each of these races being won very easily. Staghunter beat her in the Foal Stakes at Auckland, and she was not right when she ran her last race that season in the Wellington Stakes As a three-year-old she was second in the Dunedin Guineas, also in the Stewards’ Handicap at Bieearton. A year a-o she ran third in the Wellington Stakes, and on the second day won the Metropolitan Hanaicap, that was her last race as she received a knock ami developed blood poisoning. It was a bad case from the start, and though it was hoped to save Her tor the stud, it was eventually found necessary to destroy her. The trotter Young Blake has been retired, and he will end his days in North Otago. He was one of the best of our unhoppled performers, but he was on a mark from which success was difficult.

St. George is laid aside with strangles. He is a very promising prospect, and if he makes a good recovery he will go on to good class.

The three-year-old pacer Grand Canyon met with an injury while on the way home from Auckland. It will keep him in retirement for a few months.

The Wellington-owned pacer Firpo has been held on lease for some time by Mr E. R. Husband, who has won several races with the Hal Zoloek horse. He is not likely to improve, but he may get some more money in sprint races.

Merrijigs, who is now in W. T. Lowe’s stable, was favourite for the mile and a-half trotters’ race at Timaru, but he raced badly. If he settles down, he will win plenty of races, as he is a good sort. Robert Todd put up two fair performances in the unhoppled events at Timaru. He has a lot of speed, and he should do well later on.

When Royal Comrade was put in work early this season, after a good spell, he looked like going on to the best class. He won at Meth ven and also at Greymouth in the spring, while he captured the chief event at Westport on Boxing Day. He spoilt his chance at Timaru through fractiousness at the start. If he settles down to go steadily, he will be in a better class before long. Wakataua is a very smart pacer and a sound stayer. He misbehaved at the start of his race at Timaru, but he is one to keep in mind. The pacer Brixton is a good sort, who may soon be a winner. lie is very well at present. WELLINGTON NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) January 14. George Price came across on a flying trip from Sydney by the Ulimaroa this week, and returns by the Makura to-day. He visited relations and friends here, also at Palmerston North ami Wanganui. He also paid a visit to Mr G. Al. Currie’s stud at Koatanui and saw the full brother to Peacemaker and others. Peacemaker won recently at Randwick, and it is not unlikely that his full brother will cross the Tasman, as Price was greatly taken with him. Oratrix is a surprise entry for the Pahiatua Gold Cup, to be run at the end of the month. Weights are due after the first day at Foxton, and she ought to head the list.

11. R. Telford, lessee of Pharlap, has been staying with his brother at Trentham. and will be among those at the Cup meeting and the sales. At Auckland he made two purchases, securing Polyxena from J. T. Jamieson and Cynique (by Cynic), a moderate performer in the north, who is probably intended for hurdle racing in Sydney. Cynic won the Great Neither Hurdles, but he has been a failure as a sire. R. Alexander, until recently trainer for Mr J. J. Corry, will, it is reported, take up the position of private trainer to Mr Eric Riddiford. who recently returned from a trip to the Old Country. Gesture and Watch Officer both won at Trentham in the spring. The former has now won five on end. She was not engaged in the Wellington Stakes, and had Watch Officer remained here instead of going to the other side he must have taken a lot of beating. It was reported it was Mr R. Murphy, owner of Concentrate and Royal Duke, that purchased Gesture. The new owner is Mr Harold Murphy, owner of Cimabue. Mr S. O. Wood, a well-known Melbourne veterinary surgeon, came across by the Ulimaroa. Mr Wood has a veterinary hospital alongside the course at Caulfield, where 600 or 700 horses are trained, and gets plenty of practice at his profession.

It is reported that F. Davis will sever his connection with Mr T. 11. Lowry as private trainer at the conclusion of the Wellington meeting. The Hawke’s Bay owner lias not had much luck lately. Foxton trainer F. J. Carmont underwent a serious operation some time ago, and is making a slow recovery. He has half a dozen horses racing at the Foxton meeting this week, but will be unable to attend. This is the first he has missed at the coastal course for many years. Mr T. B. Dwan has purchased Lady’s Boy from Mr W. Henderson, aiid the northern performer is coming down to Trentham. where he will be trained by T. Carmont. who will train for the Wellington owner. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. VINCENT J.C. RACES. Second Day—Monday, January 13. The concluding day of the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting at Omakau provided some good racing, but the fields were on the small side. The weather was hot and sultry, but the thunderstorm of yesterday made the track less hard and dusty than had been the case on the first day. There was another excellent attendance, the totalisator figures for the day indicating how successful the meeting was. The “ machine ” handled £4BBl for the day, compared with £4214 last year, making a total of £9382 10s for the meeting, compared with £B4ll 10s last year. Results: — LOCHELLA CUP HANDICAP. The track was a bit slow as a result of recent rain, but provided excellent going There was an absence or wind, and the conditions were ideal lor an important day’s racing. A large field paraded for the Wellin--ton Cup, but several of the starters appeared to be rather flattered by inclusion in such a race. Latin Quarter and Amor quickly assumed the role of pace-makers and they set a strong one all the wav Concentrate was always well placed near the leaders, and once in the straight drew out to win handsomely, although kept busv until safely past the post. Star Stranger looked dangerous as he joined the leaders W’hen turning for home, but he was worried out of second place by a narrow margin. Glare would have been dangerous if better placed in the earlv stages of the race, but was doubly handicapped bJ being smart enough to secure a good position when leaving the straight for the back stretch. He was hopelessly placed going along the back, but put in a strong run after reaching the straight Me again proved that he requires a strong rider who can hunt him into a handv position in the early part of a race I Glare was staying on better than any- I thing bar the winner. Concentrate He was prominent this season in winning the Auckand Cup and the Wellington Cup. His dam, Oratress, dead-heated with Kilm°‘in in 1920, and also produced a New Zealand Cup winner in Oratrix. V ng C f y was a strong fancy for the lelegraph Handicap, but 8.6 on his three-year-old back was beyond his powers, although he ran a sterling good race. Meadow Lark was always well placed, and looked to be a comfortable winnm: 100 yards from home, when Rich- «• i r on tlle seene with a late run Richfield finished strongly, and should be worthy of note during the balance of the meeting. Royal Saxon also shaped promisingly. Once again it was found that the horse with an inside berth ar the six furlongs post held an advantage or er those who drew outside numbers In the absence of Mr C. O’Connor, the starting was very capably carried out by Mr \V. C. Price, who got the fields away from an excellent line. , the High-weight Handicap Prince ot Orange and Master Clarence carried most support, and they fought it out in a good finish, when Master Clarence just beat the favourite. Semper Paratus ran the best of the others, and after him came, Ihurso, Marsham, Mister Gamp, Mings Jest, and Fine Acre. The coupled pair, Sir Limond and Lady lam, started a slightly better fancy than Aspiring in the Wellington Stakes, and anything apart from Awaken was showing a good price. They got away to a fairly prompt despatch, and Arisus, Aut >• P ay ? an J ,I? a were the first to show out, with Aspiring close up. Isa, Arisus, and Autopay led into the straight, where Aspiring took charge, and appeared to be going comfortably at the distance. She, however, failed to resist a challenge from Tenterden and Awaken, who caught her in the last 50 yards. In a good finish I enter den beat Awaken by a head, with Aspiring a neck away, and close up came a bunch, composed of Lady Pam, Cylinder, Jaleux, Isa, Sir Limond, and Princess Betty. Aspiring tired in the final pinch, but was not assisted by a rough riding j 4 le " * ,,ner is a 1300gn yearling ~’T! n Rosellate, a mare that showed in different form when trained at Wingatui Rosellate was got by Kilbroney—Rosalia and belongs to the same family as Rose day.

Disorder, Head Serang, Rational 11, and Dutch Money gained most attention in the Apprentices’ Plate, but some were chary about betting with novice riders n> the saddle. They got away from a faitline, from which My Own, Air Laddie, and The Bailiff were smartest away, and ie 1 along the back. Blue Metal and Assemble dropped back to the tail of the field, and remained there. Air Laddie and My Own led round the top from Dutch Money with Disorder fairly close up. The leader ship was unchanged at the home turn and Dutch Money joined the leaders at the distance. Head Serang then came through on the rails and beat My Own by a short length. Dutch Money was a head away third, with Disorder, Air Laddie, and Dolomite next. The riders of Assemble and Blue Metal were not much use to their mounts.

In the Fitzherbcrt Handicap the crowd went solidly for Hard Words, who carried twice as much money as the second favourite. A good despatch saw Hard Words, Winsome Hind, and Zephyrus lead Jenny Diver to the straight. Hard Words and Winsome Hind were by themselves at the distance, but both were under pressure, when Jenny Diver and Green Linnet get on terms 100 yards from home. Jenny Diver finished on best, and beat Green Linnet by a short length, with Hard Words a neck away third, and Zephyrus close up. Then came Bay Acre, Rapalla, Nimble. Winsome Hind, and Double Red in fairly close order. Jenny Diver was got by Lord Quex from Polly Peachum, n half-sister to Rtinnvmede and Ganymede,

Antique was the only one on the card taken out of the Wellington Cup. Star Stranger, who looked particularly well,

carried £639 more than Concentrate, and there was about the same margin between the second favourite and In the Shade. Glare also received strong support. Stanchion. Shrewd, and Silver Paper held up the start, but they finally got away from a good line. Amor, Latin Quarter. Concentrate, and Atholspear were showing the way past the stand and to the turn out of the straight, where Glare and Silver Paper were already badly placed at the tail of the field. Amor and Latin Quarter led Concentrate, Singleton, Atholspear, and Aurora Borealis along the back, and, coming round the top, Amor and Latin Quarter were still in charge, with Star Stranger moving up to the leaders Glare and Silver Paper were running last at the far turn. Amor and Latin Quarter were still in charge at the distance, but at this stage Concentrate put in his claim and took command. Concentrate drew out and won by over two lengths from Bright Glow, who beat Star Stranger by a head. Latin Quarter was another head away, with Glare close up, and then came Atholspear, Shrewd, and 1 1 , e - Concentrate scored a popular win. as he has been one of the favourites ever since the declaration of the weights. Goshawk stalled off I-nil Feather in the run home, and beat him by half a length. Antique was two lengths and a-half away third, and Clarendon was close up fourth, with Chopin next. Lucky Light ran out wide in the straight.

Ihe draw for positions at the post for the lelegraph Handicap was as follows: —Ciniabue 9, Silvermine 17, Meadow Lark 5. Hunting Cry 2, Mervette 3. Inside the distance he looked to be a sure winner, but then had to be ridden out to resist a strong run from Richfield, who would have been very hai d to beat if he had been better placed in the early stages of the race Royal Saxon ran a good race, and looked dangerous 100 yards from home, but then faded out. Richfield was the unlucky horse in the race.

In the final event Blue Paper Ora' Eqintant. Dancing Star, Money Mint, and lioud Knight were smartest awav and as they turned for home Oral, Equ’itant Blue Paper, Proud Knight, Glen Rossie, and Havaspot were the leaders. Equitant was in charge at the distance, but Havaspot finished well, and beat him by a length and a-half. Glen Rossie was a short length away third, and then came Dancing Star, Limosin, Straightcourse, and Habit. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. THE BIG AUTUMN HANDICAPS. NEW ZEALAND NOMINATIONS. ... SYDNEY. DUNSTAN RACING CLUB.

The Dunstan Racing Club held its annual race meeting on Saturday under perfect weather conditions. The racecourse, being under the Manuherikia water scheme and commanded by water, ■was in good order and free from dust. The inside enclosure of the course presented a fine picture, having a heavy crop pf red clover, which was very pleasing to the eye on such an intensely hot day. The attendance was a record, and representative of the whole of the surrounding district. The Alexandra Brass Band was in attendance, and was supplemented by some of the members from the band at Ophir. The secretary (Mr Cowie) and the officials had the arrangements well in hand, and the meeting was a decided success. Mr Keddell got the fields away successfully, and Mr Jopp. as judge, had a difficulty at times in placing the winping horses. Mr Bodkin, M.P., was present, and was allotted the welcome task of handing out the various trophi'es. The results were:—
