COMPETITIONS SOCIETY.

ANNUAL FESTIVAL. SIXTH DAY. The twenty-eighth annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions’ Society was advanced another stage on September 23, when there was again a good attendance at the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. The principal event on the programme was, of course, the impromptu speech competition, which was held in His Majesty’s Theatre in the evening, and which, as in previous years, proved one of the most popular and interesting features on the schedule. Unfortunately, out of the nine entries, only five came forward, but with one exception they tackled the somewhat ticklish subject—" Is Man Vainer Than Woman? ’’—bravely. The sole lady competitor, who, incidentally, was the winner of this section last year, ’ declared unhesitatingly in the affirmative, thereby winning the complete regard of the feminine section of the audience, but the men, without exception, indicted the vanity of women in scathing fashion, and advanced many arguments in support of their contention. Unfortunately the competition was robbed of some of its interest by the fact that the unconscious humorist was not in evidence —indeed, most of the speakers erred on the side of seriousness, a fact which was on by the judge. The following are the results: — INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. Judge: Dr C. A. Jarman (Launceston). PIANO SOLO, under 18 years, open to those who have never won a prize at previous festivals —“ Rush Hour in Hongkong” (A. Chasins). Miss Nancy Newman (Dunedin), 83

NINTH DAY. The outstanding attraction at the evening session was the rendering of the second section of the firms’ choir contest, the section being “ Passing By,” a selection comprised by the judge (Dr Jarman). This was followed by the rendering of the two selections by the massed choirs under the baton of Dr Jarman. The enthusiastic applause which greeted each of these numbers upon its termination was a fine tribute, not only to the singing of the choirs, but also to the excellent conducting of Dr Jarman. From the opening of the first number, which was of a dainty and spirited style, Dr Jarman seemed to establish a close bond of sympathy with the vocalists, and to inspire each and every performer to even greater heights. The result was a rendering of choral music, such as is seldom heard in this city, and the audience was not slow to show its appreciation of the treat afforded. In the course of a few remarks after the results lead been announced to the | conductors Dr Jarman said he wished to congratulate the choirs on the nice renderings given. He knew that there were difficulties in the way of choirs of the kind that had appeared before him, and he was very pleased to know that there were five gentlemen who were anxious to keep up choral work in Dunedin. The choirs were doing fine work. So far as his own part song (“Passing By”) was concerned, he was wonderfully surprised. Taken all round, the efforts were really artistic, and that was what he had looked for. It was certainly a tricky piece, and to sing it so artistically and with such beautiful expression was a very big achievement. He wished to congratulate them most heartily and sincerely on their effort’.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. Judge: Dr C. A. Jarman (Launceston). VIOLIN SOLO. 16 years and over —■“ Air on the G string” (Bach). Mr W. R. Hanning (Caversham), 86 points 1 Mr Horace Le Gal (Dunedin), 84 points 2 Miss Dora J. Wilson (Dunedin), 83 points 3 VOCAL MUSIC. Judge: Dr Jarman. SACRED SOLO, gentlemen —own selection. Mr W. B. Lambert (Mornington), 85 points 1 Mr Sydney Kershaw (Mornington), 83 points •• •• 2 Mr G. M‘C. Salmond (Dunedin) and Mr A. W. F. Cole (Dunedin), 82 points (equal) 3 VOCAL SOLO, gentlemen—Own selection, accompanied by lady or gentleman. Mr Wilfred J. Kershaw (Mornington), 86 points .. .. « 1 Mr W. B. Lambert (Mornington), 85 points 2 Mr G. M‘C. Salmond (Dunedin) and Mr J. E. Davies (Gore), 84 points, equal 3

Highly commended: Mr J. D. Smith (Dunedin) 83, Mr Noel H. North (Dunedin) S 3. Mr C. S. Hawes (North-East Valley) 83. FIRMS’ CHOI'R CONTEST—(a) "A Spring Song” (Pinsuti); "(b) “Passing By” (Jarman). D.I.C’., Ltd., 167 points .. •• 1 Arthur Barnett, Ltd.. 166 points .. 2 Mosgiel Woollen Mills. 163 points .. 3 Also competed: D.S.A., Ltd., 155, Ross and Glendining 151. Section A of this item was heard on Wednesday night and Section B last night. The points gained by the choirs in Sections A and B respectively were as fol-, lows:—D.l.C., 82 and 85; Arthur Barnett Ltd., 83 and 83; Mosgiel Woollen Mills. 79 and 84; D.S.A., Ltd., 79 and 76; Ross and Glendining, 74 and 77. The conductors of the choirs were: D.1.C., Mr J. Clark; Arthur Barnett’s, Mr J. Davidson; Mosgiel Woollen Mills, Mr G. J. Scott: D.S.A., Mr F. C. Cooper; Ross and Glendining, Mr D. Blair. Dr Jarman stated that in “A Spring Song” the soprani in the D.I.C. Choir were sharp at bar 25, and again the choir was off the pitch at bars 25 to 27. The quality was good in each part, but the contralto was, perhaps, a bit thin. The phrasing was nice, and the balance was well maintained. The expression was very pleasing, and the attack and release w'ere good. In “Passing By” the words were good, but care should be taken wnh the final consonants. There was a nice delicacy of the pp tone and again of the ppp. The phrasing was nice, except that at bar 25 it was rather abrupt. The expression was very good,, but he would have liked more contrast in varied tempi. Bar 6 was sung as he had intended. Th* B choir gave an artistic rendering of the piece. In “ A Spring Song ” Arthur Barnett's Choir w-as well balanced and of nice tone in each part. The rallantando at bar 27 was rather overdone. The altos were slow at release at bar 58. 'lhe soprani and contralti sang nicely without overweighting. The phrasing was good, and the pi«ce was nicely interpreted. In “ Passing Ay ” the basses were of good quality, but too prominent in p and pp. Bar 6 was effectively changed. One bass wanted to die before the rest in the last bar. The phrasing and expression were

very pleasing indeed, and the balance and blend were good, save for the prominence of the bassets. The attack and release were good, and the quality was nice and round. The chording at times was a shade uncertain. In “A Spring Song” the Mosgiel Choir was nicely balanced, but the soprani were thin on the high staccato notes. The tone generally blended nicely, but the intonation occasionally was untrue. The expression was good, but the tempo was rather fast. The soprani at this tempo sounded breathless. The attack and release were quite clean. The bassos were light but true. In “Passing By ” the soprani quality was rather outstanding in the crescendi, and, apart from this, they were pleasant. The quality of tl>e choir generally was pleasing. The phrasing and the expresson were very artistic, and a feature was the clear enunciation. The balartte and blend were good. HUMOROUS SONG, amateurs—Own selection, not in character.
