WELLINGTON, August 2. The Women’s Auxiliary of the Reform Party arranged a delightful reception at the Adelphi Cabaret on Monday in honour of Mrs J. G. Coates. The bright rooms were crowded with guests, and the large ballroom was arranged in drawing room fashion, with the addition of beautiful bowls of fragrant wattle blossom. Mrs Coates, who was charmingly gowned in pillar-box red georgette, and sable furs, with a small red hat, was received by Mrs J. Aston (president of the auxiliary), and Mrs C. W. Earle (vice-president), and presented with a bouquet of flowers by Mrs G. W. Robinson, who has been a member of the Reform League since its inception. Speeches were made, afternoon tea was served, w song by Mis M'Leod, and a recitation by Mrs Pringle, and then those present had an opportunity of meeting and greeting Airs Coates. Among those present were most of the members of the auxiliary (numbering some hundreds), wives of members of Parliament and the Legislative Council. Mrs C. W. Salmon, daughter of Dame Christina Massey, was also present, and brought a charming little note of apology for absence from her mother. Airs Aston made a very cordial speech of welcome to Airs x Coates, and expressed the appreciation, of all of the part she had taken in assisting her husband (the leader of the party), and also on her own account, for she never failed the women at any time, and all she had done was deeply appreciated. Mrs Earle followed with some interesting reminiscences of the inception of the women’s division under the leadership of the late Mrs Newman, who, had she lived, would undoubtedly have been the first woman in the New Zealand Parliament. Airs Earle went on to regret that the Dominion had lagged so far behind the other countries which had not had the vote for nearly as long as had the New Zealand women. It was a poor compliment to the women that they were still unrepresented in the Legislature by any members of their own sex. Mrs Coates, in response, made a charming little speech, saying that the warmth and sincerity of her welcome gave her fresh heart, but she bad thought it remarkable that as when there is a change of Government there is usually a falling-off in the friends of the out-going one, but it had

been the reverse with the Reformers. The friends had rallied round in greater force and with even more cordiality. That was enough to hearten up any party. She felt that the party had a broad and excellent policy to offer, and it stood high in the estimation of people, not only here but abroad, and she was satisfied that its policy would mould the opinions of the future. She thanked all for the delightful reteption given to her. The afternoon was altogether a most successful one. The annual meeting of the Wellington Croquet Association caused much interest, and the attendance was good, there being a full attendance of delegates. The report for the year showed a most successful season. special mention being made of the fact that Airs Johnson, vice-president of the association, had proved to be the runner-up to the New Zealand champion. aS that there are now 23 clubs affiliated, with an approximate membership of 600 plaj'ers. The tournament fixtures announced for the coming season included the Dominion tournament, Palmerston North, January 8; manageress, Mrs rerguson. North Island, at Lower Hutt January 23; manageress, Airs E. Alackenzie. Wellington Association, at Lower Hutt. February 3, manageress, Airs E. Mackenzie. The following officers were elected for the season:—President, Mrs W. S. Austin; vice-president. Airs E. Johnson: secretary. Airs E. Alackenzie; treasurer, Mrs F. Wilkinson; handicapper. Airs E Eeecl ? ; referee, Airs Rhodes-Williams; Match Committee—Secretary and handicapper, with Alesdames Boocock, Bock. Gardner, Gower. Alouat, Ramsay, and Roberts. Airs E. Alackenzie was appointed as delegate to the New Zealand Croquet Council.

A successful annual dance held recently was that of the Wellington Catholic Lawp Tennis Association. This took place at St. Francis’s Hall, which was appropriately decorated for the occasion. There were many bright and pretty frocks worn, and the addition of balloons given out to the dancers and carried around, made the scene quite delightful. During the evening the shield won by the Thorndon Club in the last season was presented amid much enthusiasm. The committee responsible for the good arrangements made included Alisses G. Oxpring. D. Bush F and E. Fanning, N. Gould. Al. and T. Burgess, L. O’Driscoll, K. Brennan, M Hepburn, and E, Kennedy. Among those present were Alisses Dealy. M’Davitt, Brennan, Afartindalei K Harris, T. Black, Z. Bright P Haydon, M. Williams, A r . Berry’ l’ O’Regan. N. Weyburn, E. Gamble, and many others. Graceful exhibition dances were given by Miss Margaret O’Connor and Air AV. E. Priestley. Some very interesting meetings held in Wellington during the past week were those of the women’s division of the Farmers’ Union. There were many delegates, these coming from all parts from North Cape to the Bluff, and their programme and remits were both excellent. The latter contained reference to health, education, moral training, maternal and child welfare in all branches, as well as to other lesser subjects of importance and

benefit to residents in the country. The opening ceremony was attended by the Hons. Stallworthy and Ransom, and much pleasure was given by the assurance that the £l5O which had formerly been granted for the bush nursing and housekeepers’ fund (and after withdrawn), was to be restored to the division. Mrs Jackson was elected as president for the year, Mrs Joll presiding till the election had taken place.
