STEAMER SERVICES.

SOUTH ISLAND TO MELBOURNE.

The Postmaster-general (Mr J. B. Donald) was engaged on Tuesday morning for over an hour in hearing the views of representatives from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, the Otago Harbour Board, and the Otago Expansion League on the subject of the proposed mail service between Melbourne and the South Island. The deputation was a private one, and no details of the service will be given out till Mr Donald has met similar organisations in Invercargill and Christchurch. Mr Donald was also asked about the new Post Office for Dunedin, and he expressed the hope that it would be erected with all possible expedition. He made the promise that just as soon as the foundations were finished the Government would get on with the erection of the new building.

Milking operations on two dairy farms in the Tikokino district were brought to a standstill last week for some hours owing to the action of a humble sparrow (reports the Napier Telegraph). By some means the bird managed to get into the transformer box, and, in fluttering round in an endeavour to get out again, made a contact with its wings. The sparrow was shrivelled up when found. The farms served from the transformer were without power until the repair gang could be obtained.
