THE NORTH ISLAND.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The weather has been perfect during the past week, and now farmers axe beginning to look for rain. At present the prospects are for good weather, and grass is beginning to show signs of drying up very fast. Harvesting has been pretty well completed, and early deliveries of chaff are now being placed on the market. The price has been lower than for some time past owing to supplies coming forward. MARTON SHOW. The Marton A. and P. Society’s sixteenth annual show proved quite a success last week, the entries being both large and good. In opening the show Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P. for Rangitikei, pointed out an interesting fact, that the Rangitikei district was the third largest sheep district in New Zealand, Southland being first with 1.330,000, Hawke’s Bay second with 1,189,000. while there were 1.036,000 sheep in the Rangitikei district. Although sheep predominated at the show, there was an excellent display of cattle, pigs, and horses, while the growing popularity of the show, both from the point of view of the exhibitor and spectator, was amply shown by the large increase in entries, mainly noticeable in the home industries and school classes, and the attendance of the public. which filled the park. The prevailing weather conditions could not have been bettered, the strong sun being tempered by a cool breeze throughout the afternoon. The ring competitions attracted the show’s patrons, while numerous sideshows and stalls also did good business. On the whole the exhibits were of good quality, with competition keen in most classes.
