WELFARE OF ANIMALS.

PREVENTION OF CRUELTY SOCIETIES.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE.

WANGANUI, February 27.

The annual conference of the New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held to-day. Delegates from all over New Zealand were welcomed by the Mayor.

An Auckland remit urging legislation to prohibit vivisection was not carried, it being stated that vivisection was not being practised to any great extent, and that the existing legislation covered the requirements. It was decided that a resolution be forwarded to the Government in connection with the boneless veal traffic, more stringent regulations being held to be necessary. It was also resolved to approach societies with the object of having steer-rid-ing buck-jumping contests prohibited, and that the Government be asked to legislate so that stock in transit should be exposed to the least possible risk of injury.

Other remits were adopted as follows: —That as delay in milking causes needless suffering to cows in milk at showd, agricultural and pastoral societies not having a clause in their schedules be urged to adopt a uniform hour at which such animals should be milked, say, 7 a.m.; that it be compulsory to prevent the growth of horns on cattle other than these used for stud purposes. A proposal to federate all the New Zealand societies was discussed, and it was decided to hold the matter over for next year.
