Mrs John Hamer left on Thursday for a trip to England. Many friends assembled at the Railway Station to say farewell and wish her good luck.

Mr Drake and Miss Betty Drake left on Thursday for England and the Continent. The latter intends taking up the study of physical culture, and will be away from New Zealand for a year or two.

Mrs Laidlaw. Pitt street, gave a small afternoon tea on Friday for Mrs Fraser, ’ of San Francisco. Also present were Lady Williams, Mesdames Macassev, Branson, Gallaway, E. L. Macassey, G. Roberts, and F. Bell.

On Friday Miss Scott, Prospect House, was the guest of honour at afternoon tea in the Tudor Hall. The following met to wish her farewell, as she is shortly leaving for a trip to England: Mesdames H. L. Patterson and B. Ellis,-and Misses Snillinan, Murison, Shackelford, Minnis, Wright, Souness, Crossan, Martin Vere, Leckie, Lillie, and Wise.

The various circles at the Otago Women’s Club are commencing meetings again, a sign that summer is past. This evening the Play-reading Circle opens for 1929. Members are looking forward to meeting Miss Joachim, who has returned from a delightful trip to England and abroad, and who is to speak upon " Plays.”

On Wednesday and Thursday the Dunedin Horticultural _ Society _ held its autumn flower show in the Pioneer Hall, the general opinion being that it was the best show held here for many years. The gladiola exhibits were exceedingly beautiful, surpassing anything previously shown. Asters, too, were uncommonly fine, and shown in great numbers. Exhibits of strong sweet peas looked lovely, some very brilliant, and others delicate in the colouring.

In the Constance Hall at Columba College on Monday evening a meeting was held to elect office-bearers for the year for the Old Girls’ Association. Miss Ross was re-elected president; Mesdames Fogg and Sayers (Solomon Islands), Misses M'Gill and Sheddan, vice-presidents; Miss G. Armour, secretary; Miss M. On Wednesday evening a most original dinner was given. It was called a “ shipwrecked ” dinner party, a different course being served at six houses. Commencing with cocktails on H.M.S. Laburnum, the party proceeded to Mrs Edmond’s residence, “ Mount Lodge,” Mrs Leslie Mills’s residence, “ Piccadilly,” being the next on the list. Then followed Mrs Rattray’s, Musselburgh Rise, Mrs H. S. Fenwick’s, and Mrs R. Acton-Adams’s, " Redwood,” where the final course was served. Dancing and supper brought a delightful evening to a close. Amongst those present were Misses Batchelor, Fenwick (2), Williams (2), Throp, D. Herbert (Wellington), Acton-Adams, Back, and P. Stronach, Mrs Leslie Mills, officers of H.M.S. Laburnum, and Messrs Macpherson, Reeves (2), C. Batchelor, Edmond (2), and D. Hobbs.

On Thursday evening the officers of H.M.S. Laburnum arranged a treasure hunt, which was even more difficult than the one of the preceding week, the clues being very hard to discover. Finally, the treasure was found in a cannon in the Royal Naval Reserve Hall, where a delightful dance brought a thrilling evening to a close. Present were Commander and Mrs F. M. INVERCARGILL, March 2. The Hon. A. F..Hawke and Mrs Hawke, who have been visiting Queenstown,-have returned home.

Last Saturday afternoon the committee of the Waimate Plunket Society met at “ Heatherslie,” the home of the president, Mrs G. A. Manchester, to make a presentation to Mrs R. B. Hurst, who has resigned the position of secretary to the society. Mrs Manchester, on behalf of the committee, thanked Mrs Hurst for all she had done, and said how sorry they were she had resigned. She had been a most efficient secretary and had worked very hard for the society. Mrs Manchester then asked Mrs Hurst to accept a fountain pen in recognition of her good work. A dainty afternoon tea was then handed round, and an interesting competition brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. Those present, besides the guest of honour, were Mesdames G. Dash, E. C. CHRISTCHURCH. March 1. The Canterbury Jockey Club was rewarded with splendid weather for. its summer meeting held on Saturday at Riccarton. It was a very pleasant gathering, visitors being present in large numbers from all parts of Canterbury. The grand stand and lawns proved a cheery meeting place where town and country friends greeted each other. The dressing was varied. Diaphanous ninons and patterned crepe de chines were a popular choice; neatly tailored coats and skirts looked very smart, and a few very attractive suits with patterned velvet jumpers and finely-pleated satin skirts were greatly admired. Mrs George Gould, wife of the president, wore a graceful gown of pink beige lace and georgette and a wide-brimmed hat to match trimmed with a large chou in front. Her coat of kasha matched her frock. -Miss Barbara Gould wore a mastic and red jumper suit and a large red hat. on Friday night was a brilliant affair, and seldom has the Adelphi been in such carnival mood. Gas-filled balloons and paper caps added to the spirit of the evening, and the night being warm and moon-drenched, the roof was lifted from the roof garden, so that dancers could enjoy the fresh air at the same time as they danced. Dr and Mrs Young also gave a cabaret party, which proved one of the successes of the conference social activities, and the men and women doctors held .dinners, following up with a visit to the cabaret. An outing at Heretaunga golf links was held in perfect "weather. The week was gloriously fine all through, and this helped the Wellington hosts and hostesses considerably. The ladies of St. Paul’s branch of the Mothers’ Union entertained members of the Eastbourne branch at a delightful alfresco party at Day’s Bay yesterday in ideal weather. A spot among the beautiful bush at Day’s Bay was selected, and luncheon and tea were served amid a panorama -of harbour and bush to please the eye. During the afternoon Mrs Carte and her daughter recited, and with tea and chat the time passed all too quickly There must have been about 800 memBSrs of the Mothers’ League at Government House on Friday afternoon last, when their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson were "at home” to their guests. Lady Alice, in black wrap over blue and black hat met the mothers, as did Sir Charles, and evinced great interest in the doings of the league. His Excellency and the Bev. J. Blanchard .spoke, and a delicious afternoon tea was served. The house was "thrown open to the guests, -who found much to interest them inside and out.

_ The different croquet clubs in Wellington were the guests of the Kelburn Club on its beautiful greens on Tuesday afternoon, when its annual ■' “at home ” was held in perfect weather. Mrs W. The Ladies’ Committee of the 'Waikato Winter Show Association gave a- farewell afternoon tea on Tuesday at the “ Wattle ” tea rooms for Mrs H. Douglas and Mrs H. C. AUCKLAND, February 28. There were about 200 parishioners present at the social gathering in honour of Mrs Grant Cowen and Miss Grant Cowen, who left on a visit to England, via Sydney, last Friday. Mrs Grant Cowen was presented with a travelling cushion, and her daughter with a purse containing notes. Miss Grant Cowen will study at the Royal Academy for a year, utilising the scholarship which was awarded to her. Needless to say both will be much missed, not only in their parish, but in social circles in Auckland.

The Takapuna 'Tennis Club held its annual “at home ” at the courts last week. A large number of guests was present from other -clubs, and a progressive tournament was held. The winners were: A grade—Mrs M'Carthy and Mrs Warren; B grade—Miss Bolton and Miss Jones. The weather was delightful. Mrs A. R. Winstone, Miss Ashton, and Miss Harbutt left last Friday by the Lhimaroa for Sydney, en route for an overseas tour.

Auckland visitors to Dunedin are Mrs Ridings and Miss May Ridings, of Remuera, the former of whom is the guest of her sister, Miss Morris, of Littlebourne road, while_the latter is making a short stay with a relative in Invercargill, Mrs Arnold Macdonald. Mr and Mrs E. H. Reid are staying at’ the Esplanade Hotel, Devonport, having let their home in Remuera preparatory to a trip to England. 1 Mrs' R. W. Moorhouse, of Cambridge, and her two daughters have left Auckland for Sydney, en route to England.
