TRACK TALK.

By

Adonis.

THE INVERCARGILL MEETING. Measured by both the financial and the sporting gauges, the annual fixture of the Invercargill Club, which was held last week, was a decided success, and in respect to financial returns this would have been even more pronounced if the weather had held up over the second day. The fields were mostly composed of horses from the district, but there was a leavening of horses from over the border, and there is little doubt that this outside patronage will become greater as the classes are tightened and bigger stakes are hung up. Southland has long been recognised as one of the nurseries of trotting in the Dominion, and although last week’s fixture did not produce the number of promising young horses that some previous meetings have produced, at least three of the winners look certain to race prominently on tracks further afield— Fair Wave, Erin’s Fortune (a half-sister to Miss Adonis), and Country King (a half-brother to Queen’s Own). The southern club has been travelling in a successful groove, and the stewards have struck a note of progress in the proposal to form a seven-furlong track. COMPULSORY PRUNING. The pruning of stakes at any time is distasteful to the stewards of clubs, but •as the tailor cuts the coat according to the cloth, so must clubs base their stakes on their revenue, and that is the reason for the wielding of the pruning knife on the stakes of the Forbury Park Club’s winter meeting to the extent of £275. The pruning has, however, been carried out judiciously, and even in the case of the biggest cut —that of 70sovs from the Victory Handicap on the second day—the winner’s share of the stake is 400sovs, with 90 so vs to the second and 40sovs to the third. As is the case with other clubs, the local club is dependent on the leading stables in Christchurch for the fields in the big races, and naturally the bigger the stake the greater the inducement for the best horses to come, but it cannot be said that the stakes hung up for the forthcoming meeting have lost anything in respect to their attractiveness. It is safe to say that the nominations will be well up to the average. A feature of the meeting is, of course, the Sires’ Produce Stakes, which on this occasion promises to be a better racing spectacle than it wSs last season. when Manhattan dominated the field and won the proverbial street. THE TIMARU CUP. Trie 4.36 class attached to the Timaru Cup allows of the nominations of improving horses who have not revealed their best gaits, and in all probability three or four who can be so described will take their places in Saturday’s race, this making the problem for the backer much harder. Royal Serene, one of the limit lot, won well in her last outing after being slow over the first part of the journey, and it will only be because of her hesitancy at the barrier that backers may look further for the favourite. Travis Axworthy comes in on 12 yards better terms than when he finished second to Royal Serene at the Metropolitan meeting, but it is doubtful if this concession will help him to reverse the ( positions. Wrackler was beaten by Torpedo Huon at Auckland, but nevertheless he paced a fine race, and should be improved by it. Lingfield has been giving

promise of returning to her best form, and should Tomkinson send both her and Maiwhariti to the post the bracket will appeal to many. Omaha, Golden Bubbles, and Desert Star -are smart pacers on 4.34, and of these the Invercargill horse — looks the beet. He goes well on the grass tracks, and his recent form was sufficient to show that he was never better. The favourite is not likely to come from those further back, and if they go to the post Royal Serene, Travis Axworthy, and Desert Star will probably dispute favouritism.

IN SADDLE AND SULKY. Acceptances for the Wyndham meeting are due to-morrow. Real Home is a maiden who is expected to show improved form soon. Nominations for the South Otago Club’s meeting on March 23 are due on Friday. Lucky Voyage is an improving trotter who now looks capable of winning a looseclass race.

Nominations for the trotting events on the Tuapeka Jockey Club’s card are due on Friday. Nominations for the trotting events at the Southland Racing Club’s autumn meeting are due to-morrow. Dillon Blake is fairly smart in saddle, and the distance of the Hook Handicap Jit Waimate should suit him. . Princess Thorpe paced well enough at Invercargill to suggest that she will show improvement in her next outing. Ante-post transactions on the big race at Wyndham show a preference for Tarndale, Fair Wave, and Shady Spot. Baker Girl promises to develop into a winner very soon. She is in the Novice Handicap at Wyndham next week. Winnie Chrysler showed improved form fast week, and should race prominently in a saddle event at the Wyndham meeting. Logan Hanlon has not been finishing on well in two-mile races, but he is racing well over sprint distances, and should soon be a winner. The Petereta mare’Kereta has the speed to win a loose-class trotters’ race. She is engaged in the Kingsdown Handicap at Timaru on Saturday. C. S. Donald has a useful team engaged at Timaru. and two of them in Lindbergh and Sunny Bob may be found pacing prominently. If Lindbergh goes to the post for the Washdyke Handicap at Timaru on Saturday backers will probably have little difficulty in finding the favourite. Nelson M'Kinney will be among the pacers in the mile saddle event at Timaru, but the chances are all against him keeping to a level gait. Merce Bingen is a promising young trotter who may be found among the winne _ on the southern circuit before the season is concluded. She is t solid yet, but age will do a lot for her. It is understood that one of the winners at Invercargill last week was recently placed under offer to a prospective buyer at £lOOO, with a guaranteed trial of 4.30. Real Light is still nullifying his speed by his hesitancy at the barrier. Until he shows a disposition to fill his hopples smartly he is not likely to carry support" that is commensurate with his speed. . Nelson Prince is reported to be showing improved form in his track work, and that fact "will probably find him among the well-supported runners at Timaru on Saturday. Reo Chimes is a useful grey gelding by Cathedral Chimes. He is in his best form at present, and in one of his races at Invercargill lost a good winning chance by going to two breaks. Nelson de Oro won the Jellicoe Handicap very easily, despite the fact that he mi pu J" Henderson’s avoirdupois. Ihe Roy de Oro gelding will reach the best ot company.

Great Nelson looks certain to win good races. He put in a good final mile in his race at Invercargill after having drifted a long way from the leaders in the first

Ciown Jewel, a five-year-old mare bv biOgan Jointer from Sceptre, is credited with being smart enough to win a loose- » class race. She is one of J. R. M'Murrav’s team at Gore.

Fair Wave will eventually follow the trail taken by many other good horses from the south and take her place in good fields. She has the best of her racing days in front of her. Shady Spot paced two good races on the concluding day at Invercargill, and her performance in winning the big race left the impression that she could have gene a bit taster if anything had forced her. One of the easiest wins recorded at the Invercargill meeting was that of Erin’s Fortune in the 'Visitors’ Handicap. She is a particularly smart young pacer under saddle. Return Voyage paced a good race in the Au Kevoir Handicap at Invercargill, but the cond.tion of the track and the weight in the. sulky pulled him up in the run home. Ihe Happy Voyage pacer .will soon prove that his favouritism was*justified

• Tarn< ? al . e showed a fine Burst of speed in the big race at Invercargill on the second day, and had he not lost ground by a break he would have been closer to the winner. He looks certain to win again this season. s

The Central-trained Wattle Patch trotted two hue races at Invercargill, and won with something in hand on each occasion. He is somewhat slow in getting info Ins full stride, and so will always be best suited by two-mile races

The writer has always held a high opinion.of Country King, and will be surprised if he does not step his way into much better company. The John Dillon pacer takes the eye as one who will eventually develop into a speedy mile saddle performer.

Doncliff has shown improvement lately, and he ran his best race when he finished second to Bingen Maid on the concluding day of the Invercargill meeting. He will never be in very tight classes, but he shottid develop into a winner on one of the country tracks.

Miss Adonis paced a fine race in the Au Revolt Handicap at Invercargill, and finished in fourth place about a length the winner, after beginning very slowly. The Adonis mare is engaged at Wyndham, and that meeting should find her at the top of her form. Gardenella came with a fine finishing run to finish second to Wattle Patch in the Waikiwi Handicap at Invercargill, a - d her performance left the impression that she will be hard to beat the first time she goes away to her handicap and keeps to a level gait.

Helen M'Gregor was unlucky to be beaten, by her stablemate, Kyra, in the Murihiku Handicap at Invercargill, as she broke right on the post. She is an aged mare by Coldstream Bells from Charity Bells, and she is not likely to improve much.

The Wildwood Jun. mare Aileenwood showed nice bursts of speed when she ran second to Korn Peter on the second day of the recent Forbury Park meeting and on that performance she looks nicelyplaced in the loose-class trotters’ race at Timaru on Saturday. There were whisperings about the bona naes of one of the winners at the Invercargill meeting, but they came from those who were not fortunate enough to participate in the win. This is not infrequently the case when a horse shows unexpected improvement.

Shady Spot, the winner of the big race on the second day of the Invercargill meeting, is trained by G. Hope, who i® more closely -identified with gallopers, the bungod mare won easing up and will probably be one of the favourites for the big race at Wyndham next week. Bingen Maid, the winner of the Trial Handicap at Invercargill, is a useful four-year-old by Nelson Bingen from ErnestJP a " T> is trained at Winchester by y.-„ K - Townley, who should have little difficulty m getting her to step to a better gait than she was required to show last week.

John Appear apparently does his best when there are no others alongside of him. In the Coldstream Handicap at Invercargill last week he was taken out into the lead from the start, and he paced so solidly that he forced Reo Chimes fi° • k , brea } < " 1 016 Disa PPear gelding finished well under pressure.

Fair Wave won the Invercargill Cup ttith something 'in hand, and was 'consequently backed down to a short price m the big event the second day. Her remsman saw the winning post too far from home, however, and she was easily gathered in by Shady Spot. Fair Wave takes the eye as one who will eventually be racing on metropolitan tracks.

A report from the stipendiary stewards concerning the control of a meeting was being read to the stewards of the club concerned. When the sentence “the club stewards carried out their duties efficiently was read, one of the listeners but the stipendiary stewards didn t. Some incidents live p long while in the memory.

Kyra, whi was recently returned to her owner by Mr G. J. Barton, trotted two fine races under saddle -at Invercargill last week, and in winning the Murihiku Handicap she chipped 3 -4-ssec from her time. The Bon Homme mare showed considerable improvement as a result of her sojourn in Tomkinson’s stable, but as she goes better in saddle than she does in harness her opportunities of winning good stakes are somewhat limited.

If enthusiasm counts for anything the stewards of the South Otago Trotting Club, the first fixture of which will be held on March 23, have every reason to expect a , successful “ baptism ” of the club. Balclutha is the centre of a district in which many pacers and trotters are owned and trained, and there is little doubt that the nominations from districts further south and from Central. Otago will swell the list to satisfactory propertions. The South Otago Cup carries a stake of 35sovs and a cup valued at lOgns, while the driver of the winner will receive a gold-mounted whin; the Milton Handicap, a saddle event for unhoppled trotters, has a stake of 30 sovs, and a gold-mounted whip for the rider of the winner; and around these two principal events a seven-item card has been built which, siould attract good fields and provide interesting sport.

CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By Observer

. Having disposed of the summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockev Club owners turned their attention last Friday to another Riccarton fixture, as nominations had to be made for the two principal handicaps at the autumn meeting. The response was up to the average, there being 36 horses in the Great Easter, the same as last year, and 22 in the Great Autumn, a decrease of four. As usual, the North and South Islands are , about equally represented. Last year s winners, Reremoana and Hynanna, are again engaged. The following horses are in both races:—Pink Note, Amor, Seatoun. Black Duke. Bright Glow, Mendip, Black Mint. Tresham, Nightmarch, Commendation. In the Shade, The Hawk, and Merry Mint.

F. D. Jones left on Thursday for Wellington, on his way to Sydney, with Limerick, Paquito, and Catkin, the lastnamed being one of J. W. Lowe’s Trentham team placed under Jones’s care for trip* e He looks a useful sort. 1 aquito- is an improving four-year-old,-who will be unlucky if he fails to win a race. The star of the team, of course, is Limerick. He looked well when he left, having come on a lot since he raced at Wingatui. He seemed quite as sound as usual, though he has, of course, always given Jones some trouble. His first race will be in the nine-furlong Rawson Stakes at Rosehill, followed by the Chippin ’ Norton Stakes, one mile'and aquartcr. at Warwick Farm. Then will come the Randwick Carnival. On the first lay he will run in the Autumn Stakes, one mile and a-half. while on the following Wednesday he will have a choice between the All-Aged Stakes, with Gothic and Molhson as possible opponents over a mile, and the Cumberland Stakes, one mile and three-quarters, in which he may meet Strephon. As a wind up there is the A.J.C. 1 late, two miles and a-quarter. Provided he gets through this programme satisfactori y, he riiay go to Brisbane to

ra 9? / or le King’s Cup, which this year JL 11 * be contested at the Queensland Turf ? meeting. It is practically certain that he will not meet Aussie in the J D Ormond Cup at Hastings. M'Combe is on his way to Sydney with. Crown Area and Moorgas They ar ® in. the best of health, having done well since they raced at Trentham in January. It is probable that they will be nominated for the Rosehill and' Warwick Farm meetings before tackling Randwick. M Combes son-in-law, R. S. Bagbv. will do the riding, and he also took tlie three-year-olds, High Disdain and Jet black, tor ns own team. Percy Mason may leave for Sydney at the end of next month. In addition to Honour and Agrion, who are traininn' on nicely, he will take the other horse he is training for Mr Greenwood, also a number of brood mares for sale. Mr Greenwood i s on the eve of a leno-thy tour abroad, and the stable is to' be cleaned up, leaving only some young ones to be got ready for next season’s racing.

R. W. King has a trip to Melbourne in contemplation with Aberfeldy, who may be a starter in the Victoria Grand National Hurdles. He has been in work tor a month or two following on a lengthy spell, and he is coming on nicely. .W- Stone has returned to Riccarton with Silver Paper and Tommy Dodd, who are being got ready for autumn engagements Silver Paper may be raced at 1 rentham next week.

Gold Mint and Chickwheat are back in H. Nurses team after a spell. Sarnia has resumed work after nearly two months in the paddock. She has joined F. Christmas’s stable. T . four-year-old gelding Uproar, by 1 aladin, from Tumult, was retired a few months ago owing to an ailment. As he showed no sign of improvement, he was destroyed recently. . Gay Sonnet has not done any racing since the Dunedin summer meetinn- She is working along steadily, and she may make a trip south for the Waimate and Oamaru meetings. The three-year-old filly, Hurly Burly may be included in Sir George Clifford’s team for Trentham next week. She has not raced since August, but she is a smart hack.

Although the Banks Peninsula Racing Clubs meeting provided a pleasant outing on Saturday, the officials could not be complimented on their management, mere seemed to be no attempt to observe punctuality in getting off the races. The policy of drift set in early, and with a gradual loss -of time at each race, the start of the final event was more than an hour after, schedule. Until this question is tackled seriously, race meetings at Motukarara will never be really success-

Bonrose, the winner of the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes, is a three-year-old fillv by Bomform. her dam, Pot Pourri, bein'l- - member of the famous Madder family, which has given the New Zealand turf many notable performers, including All itod- , an d Sasanqf, two good stayers, also Munjiet. a brilliant sprinter. Bonrose is only a useful hack sprinter at present, but she is likely to improve quite -a lot. Toawai made amends for some of his failures winning the Terawera High Weight Handicap in impressive fashion. As usual, he was slow to get going, but he finished on very strongly. It. was a useful performance, though no more than was to be expected from a three-year-old with any pretensions to decent class.

No excuses could be made for the failure of Star Raid in the Terawera High Weight Handicap. He was well placed all through, and failed badly at the finish. In the meantime, he is one of the horses who reserves all his good deeds for the training track.

Beau Geste, the winner of the Peninsula Cup, has made wonderful improvement during the last few months. He was just a moderate hack last winter, but during this season he has worked his way into a prominent position in good open company, there being a good deal of merit in Saturday’s success, which followed a win a week earlier in the Midsummer Handicap. Beau Geste resembles his brother, Scion, in possessing stamina. He has not had a strenuous career so far. and he may be equal to winning longdistance races of the best class. The Oaks winner, Pride, was unlucky at the start of the Peninsula Cup, and she seemed to be in trouble all the way to make up her lost ground. On reaching the straight she came with a great rattle, and only just failed to catch Beau Geste, though she was in front a stride past the post. A repetition of this form will make Pride hard to beat" in her next race. Rapier registered a very fine performance in the Peninsula Cup, in which he carried 9.13 and filled third place after a desperate finish, in which he was beaten by two heads. He will be a hard horse to beat during the remainder of the season.

Red Heckle faded right out at the end of the Peninsula Cup. but the interference he suffered did not improve his chance. It is unlikely that he would have won, even had he avoided this trouble, but the race will do him a lot of good, as a preliminary for the St. Leger. tc be decided at Trentham in about a fortnight. Thorndale was well beaten in the Peninsula Cup a long way from home, but he is coming on gradually, and he can be ticked off for a win before the season is much further advanced.

Another member of the Night Raid family earned distinction when the three-year-old filly Sea Raid won the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. She is a smart galloper, who may pick up another hack sprint before the season closes.

Phastar, the Australian-bred three-year-old purchased recently by Dr Louisson, gained some admirers by his finishing effort in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. A slow beginning set him too big a task, though he was running on in great style ovpr the last furlong. Great Star gave further evidence of his usefulness by winning the Kinloch Handicap. He should have no difficulty in seeing out a mile journey in good company next season, though, a sevenfurlong course is far enough to show him at his best just now.

Arch Arrow ran a creditable race when he ran second to Great Star at Riccarton and his win in the Forsyth Flying Handicap was confirmation of that form. He has a nice turn of speed, -which will serve him at other country fixtures, but he is

never likely to shine when the class is at all select.

. Aberfeldy made quite a good showing in the Forsyth Flying Handicap. He may pick up a flat run shortly, though he is being prepared specially for important jumping events in the winter. Ihe local trotting trainers are very busy at present preparing their,.teams for a number of meetings which are looming up. The Timaru Trotting Club will race on Saturday, New Brighton following a Y e , e ,. a l er > while the Easter fixture at Addington is only a fortnight further on. Ihe pacer Silk Thread has recovered troni his lameness, and he is progressing satisfactorily in his work. Silk Thread has been troubled with splints, but veterinary attention has cured the trouble. Lhe American stallion is a good two-miler, and. only has to keep sound to reach the oese class.

Golden Bubbles is now in regular work under E C. M'Dermott’s charge. She is a useful mare over short courses, and she may stay later on.

Lingfield is not doing much fast work at present. She has come on a lot lately, but she has raced unluckily. A win is about due.

S. J. Thomas is working a two-year-old colt by Silk Thread from Glimpse. The young pacer resembles his sire, and shapes like being useful. C. Tasker is handling a couple of young pacers one by Harold Dillon and the other by Matchlight. E. Carlyon has just taken in hand a two-year-old colt by Brent Locanda from the one-time champion trotter Reta Peter the youngster goes at the pacing gait. ihe pacer Dilnon has been sold by W d bl™ 11 tO a patron of C " S " Donald’s

. J ; Kennedy, recently put Logan dOr into work after a spell, but he was found to be affected in the wind, and he was sent back to his owner. This was a piece of bad luck, as he showed great promise. & •

The trotter Golden Girl is showing improvement in her work at New-Brighton, but she will require some more race experience, as she is unreliable in her "ait Loganwood is having an easy time at present, and tins once reliable pacer is not likely to make further improvement. His accident in the paddock some time ago has left him unsound. His halfsister Myrtlewood is being kept in work, ohe is useful over short courses, but will never reach good class. The gelding by Drusus trom Dollar Princess, in D. W. Robertsons New Brighton stable, is not being hurried, as he is growing fast. He looks a useful sort, and he has an easy way of doing his work. H. Frost has taken in hand a two-year-old filly by Drusus from Donaldina, the dam of the brilliant Daphne de Oro. She has not been long in work, but she shows great promise.

Ashley Dillon is now being trained bv J. Lorgelly at New Brighton. He is a last but unreliable pacer, being bad at the barrier. Lorgelly has had some suecess w itli other horses who gave trouble in this way, so he may improve Ashley Dillon. If he does, he should be rewarded with a win. as the horse is a sneedy pacer.

Avenger is having a snell at present. He shows a lot of speed in his work, but he does not race so well. Latterly, too, he has failed to go off kindly. 19; F x ßob l nson is working a two-vear-old by Guy Parrish from Our Goldie.' He is a pacer, though both his parents are trotters. He is not being hurried, but he should do well next season. Becky Mine is furnishing into a good looking she should develop into a useful two-miler.

H. Frost has three young trotters in work at New Brighton. One of them is by Guy Parrish from Marie de Oro. by Copa de Oro from Mary Lincoln, while the others are by First Fashion and The Triumph. WELLINGTON NOTES. <From Opr Own CORRESIMS x March 1. Trentham trainer, D. M'Cauley. went soiiui with Courtlike and Ripdale for tlie Canterburj’ summer meeting, and both finished in the money. Courtlike, who scored her only previous win on the opening day of the "Vv airarapa summer meeting, beat all but the winner of the Lyttelton Plate, in which she met an unknown quantity that had not previously sported silk. It was in this race that Ked Heckle scored in his first start and his only appearance as a two-year-old. Kipdale ran his best race to date in the Hornby Handicap. He was picked up cheaply for a few pounds at the Wellington summer sales a couple of years back. He was purchased by a patron of R. Longley s stable, and did not accompany his stablemate back to Trentham. The nominations received for the Wellington autumn meeting on March 16 and 18; St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday this year—are very satisfactory. The total is 368. which is an increase of 34 compared with last year. Although Night Lad failed to fulfil his engagement at Riccarton he is engaged at Trentham, where he was successful on his last appearance.

Nightmarch and Red Heckle, the two best three-year-olds of the year, have only met once this season, when they finished in the order named. Both are down to run at Trentham. but they are unlikely to meet. Nightmarch is not in the St. Leger, and Red Heckle is not in the Gold Cup.

Count Cavour and Rapine, previous winners of the two-mile weight-for-age race, are again engaged. If the going happens to be heavy, Count Cavour may trouble the three-j’ear-old. In his previous win he beat Rapine and Star Stranger down the course.

There are eight horses left in the St. Leger—two or three probably through oversight—and a good race should be witnessed between Red Heckle, Toxeuma, and Concentrate.

Gascony and Reremoana are previous winners of the North Island Challenge Stakes down to run. Commendation, Paganelli, The Hawk, and the two-year-old Pink Coat should make the contest more interesting than iu—some years. Previous winners of the popular'Thompeon Handicap again engaged are Joj’ King and Reremoana. who has won the race on two occasions. The southern contingent include Meadow Lark, Pink Note, and Silver Paper.

High Disdain, who recently showed winning form up the west coast is to race at Randwick in the autumn. He was shipped to-day in charge of J. M'Combe. 1. L>. Jones was also aboard with and his two companions. Ithough Pink Coat has been left in the North Island Challenge Stakes it is stated he will make his next appearance 111 the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton. Red Edna (All Red—Edna May II). dam of Pink Coat, is half sister to the successful East Coast sire, Autumn bv Autumnus). His most successful son, Jhreadneedle, from imported Slipstitch (Henry the First—Quickstitch), was retired to the stud early. The first of his progeny are now foals, mostly browns, the same colour as the sire, and even with the limited opportunities he will get should make a name as a sire. Break o’ Day (Finland — Selene) runner-up to High Court on the concludr ing day at Woodville, proved the best of the lot in the High Weight Handicap for jumping riders at Dannevirke. Novar, conceding his opponents just on two stone, failed to get in the money.

The best of the Maiden' Plate lot was Propaganda ((Star Stream—Miss Kelly), was was second to Arikinui in a big field in the concluding event at Trentham. The three-year-old gelding. High Court (Grand Court—Taleteller), winner of the Kumeroa Hack Handicap on the concluding day at Woodville, scored in the Dannevirke Cup from the useful Locarno. The east coast performer, King Willonyx, was among the unplaced division. . Delude (Elysian—Frith) got home first in the Tahoraite Hack Handicap from Mothplane and Tunbridge. My Own was taken out of the Rakaiatai Nursery Handicap. Two others from L, Wilson’s stable started, with Glasslough (Lord Quex —Fair Rosamond) favourite. He could only get third to Te Awha (Lord Quex —Makere), bred and owned by Mr Taranaki te Ua.

Shortly, who won at Wairarapa at New Year time, was considered the best of the lot that contested the Oringi Hack Handicap. but he could only get third to Sylvan Dell (Lord Quex —Merry Dale) and Pate* aroa.

Plimmerton, who carried all before him up the east coast, could only dead-heat for third in a field of five in the Presi* dent’s Handicap. Vast Acre won nicely from Dobbin. Mr W. H. Gaisford scored a win in the concluding event with Disrank (Lord Quex —Morganatic). This made three winners for Lord Quex in the last four events.

AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Digger.

Mr H. Rama intended to leave for Sydney on Friday with Hoariri and Taneriri. Hoariri is a doubtful quantity for Sydney racing on account of unsoundness, but Taneriri is an improving maiden who should not be hard to place in the varied classes there.

No acceptances were available at time of writing for the Franklin meeting, but there is every reason to believe that the club will have a successful meeting. It is handy to the city, and will some day rival the suburban meetings in popularity. Mr J. Vincent has been appointed starter for the Ohinemuri Jockey Club—an appointment that has met with general approval.

The Wynyard Plate winner Gold Money is getting through a lot of solid work in view of the Franklin Cup engagement. She ran close up fourth in the Great Northern Derby, so that at two furlongs less she should not be out of her d'stance on Saturday. Her brilliancy will be an asset on the Pukekohe track, and with that good apprentice R. Gill in the saddle she will be one of the hardest to beat.

The two-year-olds engaged at Franklin are not a good lot, but several have shown promise. After his good showing at Te Aroha Gay Duke should be the favourite, with Imperial Prince and Currajong also in demand.

It is not yet known what race will be attempted with Maori Boy on Saturday. but he will find favour in any event he .contests. He is a very solid fellow who is improving all the time, and he is well seasoned with racing. The speed}' Vallar is infusing all his accustomed dash into his work without being allowed fully to extend himself. He is a classy galloper, and must always be reckoned with. On a fast or slow track he is at home, so that conditions need not he considered when weighing up his prospects.

One of the unlucky horses of the season is, Hyde Park. He has lost two races through injudicious horsemanship, but his turn may not be far off. He has been doing a good deal of solid work, and is one of the fancies for the Franklin Cup. The Begum, the elder sister to Supremacy, answered all demands in her first race in open company at Rotorua. She has fine speed, and is brilliant from the barrier. She will meet a slightly better field of sprinters at Pukekohe, but should prove the hardest to beat. The distance- hacks in Auckland are nob a great lot. and the maiden Bold Archer will cause them a lot of trouble if Jamieson decides to race, him at the Franklin meeting.

The Te Aroha hack Indolent is showing better form as he gains experience. He was decidedly unlucky at his home meeting, and it may not take him long to break the ice. At present lack of speed out of the tapes is the. only thing that prevents him from winning. Sleeny Sal is in good order at present. He will meet an easier class than usual if taken to Pukekohe for the Highweight Handicap, and he may repeat a former success on that course. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. OTAHUHU TROTS. Second Day—Wednesday, February 27. The Otahuhu Trotting Club’s summer meeting was concluded at Alexandra Park in fine weather. The course was in good order, and there was a fair attendance. The totalisator receipts for the day were £36,745, compared with £40,652 for the corresponding da}' of last year, a decrease of £3907. The total receipts for the meeting were £77,125 10s, compared with £86,624 for last year, a decrease of £8498 10s. Results:—

Clark, R. Telfer, John Mitchell, L. Barrett, R. M. Greenslade, J. Goldsmid, and James Black. Mr Ritchie moved, in accordance with notice, that the resolution of the committee making a charge of 30s a year for the loose boxes at the park be rescinded. He thought that the charge was to heavy for the trainers.—Mr Barton seconded the motion.—lt was pointed out that the boxes were used by local trainers.—The motion was carried, and the charge was then fixed at £1 per year. A letter was received from Mr J. B. Norris, secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, stating that May 9 and 11 were available as the dates for the club’s winter meeting.—Received. Mr Norris also wrote regarding the inquiry held into the driving of Koro Peter {driven by R. B. Berry), and that into the crossing by R, Townley (driver of Engagement, who was fined £25), and asking why the evidence of the stipendiary steward in both cases was not sent to the New Zealand Trotting Association.— These inquiries were held by the Judicial Committee at the recent meeting of the club. —The chairman stated that the secretary had sent on the explanation. During the hearing of these inquiries the stipendiary steward is a member of the committee, and he simply makes his statement —he does not give evidence. WINTER MEETING.

Mr Greenslade (chairman of the Programme Committee) submitted the programme for the winter meeting. He said that the total stakes to be offered came to £4525, which was a cut of about £3OO on the corresponding meeting last year. The prize money for the Prince of Wales Handicap (first day) and for the Victory Handicap (second day) w'as set flown at 550sovs and 530sovs respectively. There was no race for a stake of less than 200sovs. The Sires’ Produce Stakes had been put forward from the second day to the first day, and in its place a mile and a-half race had been included for pacers—the Southland Handicap a 2.20 class. The reason for making the alteration was because it, was thought that some of the horses in the Produce Stakes might be nominated for the second day. The St. Glair Handicap (first .day) and the Peninsula Handicap (second day) would be run over two miles, for unhoppled trotters, the class being 4.43 this time. —The programme was approved. LADIES’ TICKETS. The chairman said that the question of making a charge for ladies’ tickets would have to come before the committee sooner or later. Their secretary (Mr Cafiin) had got some information on the charges made by other clubs, and members could consider them and be prepared to give an opinion when the business came up. The information showed that at the Wellington Trotting Glub’s meetings ladies were charged 2s fid to the lawn enclosure and Is to the’ outside enclosure. Each member received three ladies’tickets per day, and each steward received 15 ladies’ tickets. The New Brighton Trot-

ting Club charges Is for admission or 5s to the enclosure, members of the club receiving two ladies’ tickets each day; the New Zealand Metropolitan Club charges 2s for admission to the outside enclosure or 5s to the inside enclosure, members receiving three per day; the Canterbury Park Trotting Club charges Is for • admission ox’ 5s to the enclosure, members receiving three ladies’ tickets per day; the Timaru Club charges for ladies’ tickets the same as for men. each member receiving three ladies’ tickets; the Oamaru Trotting Club makes no charge for ladies’ tickets; the Gore Club charges 2s to the outside enclosure or 3s to the inside, each member receiving two ladies’ tickets. Mi - Black stated that 49C0 ladies’ tickets had been collected at the gates at the recent meeting. Allowing for, say. 2000 tickets issued to their members, this left about 3000 ladies who had gone in on free tickets. GPASS TRACK.

It was decided to instruct the Works Committee to arrange for the formation of a grass track inside the course, the club not to incur a cost beyond the labour of the club's employees above £l5. CHANGE OF GEAR.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr Barrett, to send a remit to the Trotting Conference asking that any permission given to a trainer or owner to make a change in the gear of his horse from one day to another should be made public in a conspicuous part of the course.

TOTALISATOR PERMITS.

APPLICATIONS FOR “FLOATERS.” WELLINGTON, February 27.

Very many applications are being received by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr P. A. de la Perrelle) from racing clubs in both islands for the loan of one of the two totalisator permits termed by tire racing fraternity “ floaters ” by reason of their not having been permanently allocated. The Minister, who returned to Wellington this morning from the north, was waited upon by the racing clubs of all the districts he visited for a loan of the jiermits which, for the present racing season, were lent to the Whangarei and Waverley Chibs. Mr de la Perrelle said that he could easily see after his travels in tire north that the temporaryallocation of the floating permits was going to present some difficulty. “There are very many clubs deserving of assistance and consideration,” he said. “ I intend to weigh the claims of each club very carefully before I make the allocation, but I must say that I have a problem to decide, for there are so many clubs catering for Hie racing public that need assistance.”

COMMISSIONERS’ FINDINGS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)

LONDON, January 9. The Board of Trade Commission inquiring into the loss of the Rye Harbour lifeboat on Novembr 15 announced in its findings that it was not possible' to say that the lifeboats caused or contributed to the loss of the crew of 17.

Allegations had been made concerning the buoyancy of the lifebelts.

The findings were announced at Rve by Judge Cann. He sat as Wreck Commissioner, with three assessors—Vice-admiral E. L. Booty, Captain J. Garriock, and Mr E. F. Spanner. Points from the conclusions, which were in the form of answers to questions from the Board of Trade, were: — The crew selected the non-self-righting type of lifeboat as the most suitable for the class of work she and they would be called upon to perform. In fact, she was quite suitable.

The crew used and expressed their approval of the pattern No. 3 lifejacket, and in response tq an invitation by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution voted by a majority of 11 to 6 to retain it in preference to No. 2 waistcoat pattern. Under the existing regulations governing the transmission of telephone messages there was no undue delay in transmitting the information that the lifeboat was no longer required owing to the crew of the steamer in distress having been saved.

Prompt and proper measures were taken to recall the lifeboat, but the recall flag should liave been hoisted at daybreak. It is, however, highly improbable that the recall flag would have been seen if hoisted. It is probable tlxat the recall signal (made by rockets) was not seen.

We are of opinion that while attempting to make the harbour on a strong flowing tide and in a high and dangerous breaking sea, with a gale of wind on her quarter, the lifeboat suddenly- capsized and the crew were thrown into’the water, two men being entangled under the boat. The broken water and heavy- surf_caused the loss of tlie crew.

Owing to the sea and weather which prevailed it is impossible to say what happened to the lifejackets worn by the erew from the time when the boat capsized until they readied the shore, or to say how the lifeboat functioned. Neither is it possible to say that the lifejackets caused or contributed to the loss of life.
