WALLACETOWN MARKET. INVERCARGILL, February 26. There were decreased yardings forward m each section at the .veekly AA r'allacetown stock sale to-day, and there was a steady demand, prices remaining firm, being in most cases about on a par with those ruling a week ago. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition was fairly keen, especially in the case of fat cattle, of which there were some outstanding quality animals forward. Store cattle, showed an easing tendency. Fat lambs, of which there were not -a great number forward, met a fair demand, and sold at about schedule rates.

Store Cattle.—There was only a small yarding in this section, consisting of r. pen of two and a-half year old steers, two pens o r good quality empty cows, and the balance oddments of empty cows and heifers and 18 months steers. The sale showed an easy tendency on recent sales. Two and a-half year old steers realised £8 10s; empty cows, £5 15s; 18 months heifers, £4 5s to £4 15s; and 18 months steers, £6. Fat Cattle.—The yarding was considerably smaller than that vf last week, and comprised a few pens of prime bullocks, which sold on the basis of from 40s to 42s per 1001 b. The bulk of the yarding consisted of cows and heifers, with a fair proportion of good quality stock. These sold at about last week’s rates, but towards the close the sale firmed considerably. The latter part of yesterday’s cattle sale was the best for some time. The vealer yarding comprised a few very prime calves, which sold at good prices. Extra prime bullocks realised up to £2l 15s: good medium weights from £l2 to £l5 10s; lighter sorts doi.n to £lO 10s; extra prime cows up to £l2 12s 6d; medium weights, from £7 10s to £9 10s; lighter sorts, down to £6; prime heifers, up to £ll 10s: medium weights, from £9 to £lO 19s; lighter sorts, down to £7 10s; vealers, 'rom 30s to £3; with runners up to £4.

Store Sheep.—There was also a smaller yarding in this section than at the previous sale, but the prices realised were quite good. Forward condition rape lambs realised 23s 8d; medium ewe lambs, 23s 9d; light condition ■wether lambs, 19s; small mixed sex lambs, 16s; sound aud failing-mouthed ewes, 19s 6d; fresh condition aged ewes, 12s 6d to 14s; lighter sorts, from 9s to Us 7d. Fat_ Sheep and Lambs.—The offering in this section was considerably fewer than that of a week ago, and comprised a few pens of prime wethers, which sold at about last week’s rates. A large quantity of good ewes and prime ewes sold well, as did also freezing sorts. The fat lamb section comprised a small entry, and the quality was fairly good. These sold at prices on a par with last sale and round about schedule rates. The yarding was about up to butchers’ requirements, and the bulk was sold at auction, but there was no particular keenness throughout the sale. Extra prime wethers realised iip to 345; medium weights from 29s to 31s; lighter sorts down to 27s 6d; prime heavy ewes up to 25s 6d; medium weights from 16s to 18s 6d; ..lighter sorts• down ■to 15s; prime butcher’s lambs up to 33s 6d; good freez-. ing lambs from 27s to 295; lighter sorts down to 255.

OAMARU MARKETS.

OAMARU, March 1.

Although the Farmers’ Wheat Co-opera-tive Association has not yet been drawn upon by millers to any extent, operations in wheat have been on a fairly large scale during the past week. The millers appear to be determined to draw upon the Wheat Pool as a last resort, and as there was a heavy carry over last season, there is a prospect that some of the pool wheat may not be required. This is the view expressed by some of the millers. On the other hand, the Co-operative Association contends that there is a shortage, and that it will pay the growers to hold in the meantime. Sales effected during the week include a good many parcels of Tuscan wheat at 5s 8d per bushel, Hunters at 6s, and Velvet at 6s 6d, on trucks at country stations. The demand for oats is by no means keen, but sales of A Gartons have been made at 2s 9d per bushel, on trucks. Oaten sheaf chaff is still a negligible quantity and the price has somewhat weakened.

Cape barley has been sold at 3s 9d per bushel, on trucks. . Grass seeds are coming in ' slowly. Italian rye has not been offering to any extent, but a good many sales of cocksfoot have been made at from 6d to 8d per pound. Transactions in potatoes have been restricted and the prices obtained for good table sorts have been from £3 15s to £4 per ton, on trucks. .The live stock market has been fairly active; but the demand for stores has been restricted on account of the continued dry weather. Fat wethers have sold at from 32s 6d to 365, fat ewes at 20s to 225, and fat lambs up to 335. Mixed sex rape lambs have sold at from 20s to 235, store lambs 18s 9d, cull lambs 10s, hoggets 265, sixtooth ewes 27s 6d, eight-tooth ewes 24s 6d, two-tooth wethers 24s 6d, full and failing-mouth ewes 14s 6d.

The transactions in cattle have not been numerous. Light steers have realised from £7 to £B, light heifers from £5 10s to £6, and cows from £7 to £lO. Forward

cows have realised from £4 to £6, ordinary cows £3 5s to £4 ss, and mixed calves from £2 to £2 ss. . Dairy cows coming to profit have changed hands at from £7 to £B. The pig market continues weak. Store pigs have sold at 20s, slips at 15s to 16s, and weaners from 6s 6d to 10s. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. GRAIN.

Oats.—As far as this market is concerned it is well nigh non-existent, as all old oats bought by merchants have long since changed hands, any in store being held on account of northern buyers. The earlier sown crop is now under the bindet, but the later lots, sown down in many instances well on in November, can hardly come under this operation for a fortnight to three weeks. In the absence of any offerings from growers any figures given must be distinctly nominal. Such prices a., are being quoted by northern brokers f.0.b., s.i., for shipment ex southern ports at 3s 4d A’s, 3s Id B’s, will not be considered by local merchants other than as a buying speculation. Local growers almost certainly will not accept such an equivalent,, 2s 7d to 2s Bd, on trucks for A grade, as generally the farmers have found that it is a much better paying proposition to feed oats and chaff to stock. The consensus of opinion is that prices locally will not open at anything less than 3s 6d, f.0.b., for A’s.

Ryegrass.—Offerings from growers are now beginning to come in almost daily, and on .the basis of prices paid to growers rates between merchants will range round about 5s 6d per bushel for 271 b seed up to 6s for 301 b seed and over, f.0.b., for seed with high germinating qualities. Crested Dogstail.—ln the almost entire absence of business little better than nominal figures can be quoted. One or two northern buyers, in all probability more as a speculation than anything else, have invited offers for machine dressed seed down to as lou as 6d per lb. Local values are more nearly 7d per lb for really prime, bright machine dressed seed with a germination of 95 per cent, or thereabouts, darker one-third or onefourth grade seed down to 6d per lb. Chewings Fescue.—Any business which has been done so far has been of a forward nature, as lots from growers have hardly yet come into the stores after threshing. Heavy weight machine dressed seed With a germination exceeding 90 per cent, is valued at from 7Ad, f.o.b. STOCK REPORT.

The stock market is very active at the present time, and all classes of stock, pai ticularly store sheep, are changing hands freely. The yardings at the various centres are now large, the bulk of the offerings being lambs, and from now on breeding ewes will be coming forward in larger numbers. The fat stock market at present is quiet, prices have eased slightly during the past few weeks, the yardings being in excess of requirements, rat cattle have also been offering more freely, but any 'animals showing quality are still making good values. Fat Cattle.—Prime heavy bullocks, £l6 10s to £lB 10s; medium do, £l4 to £l5 10s; prime heavy heifers, £lO 10s to £l2medium do, £9 to xlO; prime heavy cows, £lO to £l2 10s; medium do, £7 10s to £9vealers t° £2; runners, to £5; prime ox beef, 3/s 6d to 40s per 1001 b; prime heifer beef do; cow beef. 27s 6d to 32s 6d per 1001 b.
