THE ANTARCTIC QUEST.

COMMANDER BYRD’S EXPEDITION. DEPARTURE FOR FAR SOUTH. Faring forth into the desolate and inhospitable regions of the Far South, urged forward on their quest by the spirit of adventure that has been one of the chief driving forces of human progress, the members of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition left Dunedin at an early hour on Sunday morning to wring some of their secrets from the silent, ice-covered wastes of the Antarctic. Though the hour of sailing was early some 600 persons had gathered on the wharf to watch the departure of the City of New York and the Eleanor Bolling and to tender the explorers a hearty farewell from the last centre of civilisation which many of them will see for a considerable period. At the last moment it was found necessary to unload the large aeroplane cases from the City of New York and these will be picked up by the Eleanor Bolling on her return to this port. Two of the smaller aeroplanes are, however, stored in the holds of the City of New York, and will be landed at the Bay of Whales, where they will immediately be assembled.
