PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

MONTHLY MEETING OF SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by the Rev. W. Saunders (chairman), Mrs Porteous, Sir George Fenwick, and Messrs W. F. Sligo, S. P. Leith, J. Sheppard, A. D. Sutherland, and A. Stewart. Mr H. Jutsum wrote criticising the decision of the society in regard to the dehorning of cattle, and forwarded a report of a court case on the subject in 1888.— The letter was received. Miss Elizabeth Smith, of Christchurch, wrote stating that the society had mistaken her reason for desiring the formation of a “ Jack London Club.” Her idea was not to prevent animals being trained in New Zealand, but to help to stop Hie demand for trained animals by showing disapproval of films showing acting ” ¥ animals.—Members expressed doubt whether the method of training was always cruel, and on the motion of Sir George Fenwick it was decided to write to the Royal Society asking for information on the subject, _ Correspondence with respect to Animal * elfare Week was received from the organiser, Mr J. A.' Forbes, and satisfaction with the result was expressed.—On the motion of Mr Sligo it was decided to write to Mr Forbes expressing admiration of his work for many years past in connection with Animal Welfare Week.— Sir George Fenwick, in seconding the motion, stated that the society should support Mr Forbes. It was only through Mr Forbes s work that the society was able to get into touch with the younger members of the community.—lt was also decided to ask Mr Forbes, who intends to retire, whether he could suggest a successor or whether anyone had volunteered to take up the work.—The committee was supplied with a balance sheet showing that the sum of £6 had been lost in organising Animal Welfare Week, and it was agreed to provide a portion of the deficiency.—Both the chairman and Sir George Fenwick stated that the committee had not shown sufficient interest in the work, and that its attitude bordered on apathy. Accounts amounting to £45 Ils fid were passed for payment.
