FIRE ON A STEAMER.
EVIDENCE OF INCENDIARISM. OUTBREAK PROMPTLY QUELLED. AUCKLAND, November 23. A deliberate attempt was made to set fire to the Australian steamer Woolgar at the King’s wharf. At about midnight on Wednesday dense smoke and the crackling of flames in the chart room and on the bridge deck awakened Captain M’Leod and the wireless operator. The flames were soon subdued by Mr Blythe, the chief officer, with the patent fire extinguisher. The fire had been caused by kerosenesaturated waste placed inside the chart room door and set alight. The damage was very slight. The matter is in the hands of the police, but no arrests have been made. The Woolgar left for Waikokopu and Napier yesterday to discharge the balance of her hardwood cargo from Bunbury.
