ENGLISH WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. LONDON, September 17 There are 113 entries fo? the English women’s native golf championship, which begins at Walton-on-Hcath on October 1 Among the competitors will be Miss Cicely Lascelles, of Melbourne, who ir eligible by birth qualification, and who will meet Mrs Guedalla in the first round. For the News of the World professional championship prize the semi-finals resulted: —C.-A Whitcombe beat J. J Tay lor, 7 and 6 ; Cotton beat Jolly, 7 and 5 WHITCOMBE THE WINNER. LONDON, September 22. In the final for the News of the World prize C. A. Whitcombe boat T. H. Cotton, 4 up and 2 to play. SUPERB PLAY OF FINALISTS. LONDON, September 22. The final between Whitcombe and Cotton is described as one of the greatest matches in this history of British golf. All the first nine holes were halved. Then Whitcombe came home with the amazing total of 31—9 under bogey. He was leading, 4 up, at the end of the round, his score being 68 to Cotton’s 72. Cotton began the second round superbly. He accomplished the first nine holes in 32, and then squared the match. Whitcombe returned to the attack and took the next five holes in 2,3, 3,3, 3. The brilliance of both players was shown in the fact of the eclectic scores, 34 holes being played in 12 under 4’s. The onlookers, both professionals and amateurs, were thrilled. George Duncan declared that Whitcombe had shown that he was one of the world’s greatest golfers. J. H. Taylor said, “ I have never seen anything like it.”

TOURNAMENT IN AMERICA. QUALIFYING ROUNDS. NEW YORK, September 22. Farrell, with a score of 147, gained first place in the qualifying 36 holes for the local professional tournament. Kirkwood (153 tied) for seventh place, and Hagen (159) tied for fourteenth place. Kirkwood led the field after the first 18 holes, which he did in 73. MEDAL MATCH. A medal match was played on the Balmacewen Links >n Friday. The best scores were:— A Grade.—Miss C. Williams, 93, 17. 76; Mrs Burns, 94, 13, 81; Miss D Williams, 97, 16, 81; Mrs MCartliy, 85 3, 82.
