THE EAGLE AND THE TORTOISE. u ’ .said Golly, “ that’s a whopping chicken.” <« a° n A be ig n °rant,” retorted hi s chum, “that’s an eagle!” So tis, agreed Golly. “ Let’s go and see what’s on the way.” Approaching quietly, they heard the tortoise saying to the eagle. I m sure I could fly if only I could get up into to the air.” “ All right,” said the great bird. “ I’ll take you up/ and we’ll see how you frame. So saying he grasped the tortoise firmly in his claws, and in a few minutes was soaring high up among the rocks. The Chums raced up the mountain side to have a better view. Presently the eagle considered he had flown high enough, and released his hold. “ Now fly. down,” he said. The tortoise was too terrified to reply, as he descended helplessly to the earth. He landed with a crash, and only his strong shell back saved him from death. The rest of the animals laughed at his humiliation. “That’s knocked the swank out of him,” observed Golly. “Anyway,” he added, “ it has tortoise a lesson.” “Ah! w’hat a joke,” groaned his pal. “ You deserve to be dropped from the clouds for that.” (To be Continued.)
