LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.
DIPLOMA TO MISS JULIAN. j AUCKLAND, August 30. The distinction of being the first woman in Auckland to earn the Royal Life Saving Society’s diploma is held by Miss Maida Julian, a student at the Auckland Training College, and the award was presented to her to-day by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr G. Baildon) in his capacity as president of the Auckland head centre of the society. The diploma can only be won after very difficult tents, with a final examination paper which has to be forwarded to London. In congratulating Miss Julian, Mr Baildon expressed the view that swimming should be a compulsory subject in schools. He hoped Miss Julian’s success would be a stimulus to others to strive to win the award. ' It was mentioned by the secretary of the centre (Mr A. B. Coleman) that the Minister of Education (Mr R. A. Wright) had suggested to the centre that the pupils of the Fifth and Sixth Standards should be instructed in life saving, and that the council of the society should arrange for instructors to make 2000 teachers proficient in life saving by next February. •
