A process of steam sterilisation of the soil is now being carried out at certain tomato houses at Nelson (says an exchange). Paying a visit to the gardens recently, Sir John Russell mentioned that steam sterilisation was discovered at Rothamsted, but some of the methods used in Nelson were new to him and an improvement on those used elsewhere. Sawmill owners report a revival in the industry, and with spring now here an improvement is looked upon from now on (says the Riverton correspondent of the Southland Times). The trade from the Commonwealth has an upward tendency and local mills have been shipping a consignment to Australia. Several dwellings are in course of erection - , and, as the orders will be equally distributed, this should keep the mills employed. '
