' “ There would be no glory for the winners if the others did not compete,” was a remark made (says the Guardian), by Mr Hutchens, the judge of the vocal and instrumental items at the Ashburton Competitions, as a word of encouragement to unsuccessful competitors. The many overseas ships which visit that port take a variety of cargoes from Timaru, but seldom, if ever . before, has a vessel included eels in her shipment (remarks the Herald). The- Mahana, which left last Thursday took nine cases of eels from South Canterbury for London. Eels, it is said, are considered to be a great delicacy at Home, and efforts are being made in South Canterbury to create an export trade of these fish.
