THE DOMINION TOURNAMENT. OPENING GAMES. TIMARU, August 30. There was a fair attendance at Fraser •Park this morning when the first series of matches in the women’s Dominion hockey tournament was played. Otago A played its first game against Eastern B, and the match was full of interest, Otago being more scientific than the younger opposing team, and having the better of the game throughout. From the initial bully. Otago gained the advantage, and from spirited play Miss D. Moir, with a long shot, found the net. Otago kept up the pressure at the Eastern goal line where, from a penalty, Miss P. Hopkinson netted Otago's second goal. Eastern was hemmed in and could not make any progress against the good Otago forward rushes. Miss O. Butler took a long shot, the ball rising over the net, but, from the bully at the twenty-five, Miss B. Hopkinson shot her second goal. Eastern now attacked, the play going into the Otago territory.. Miss M. Blag- - don cleared upfield in a pretty run. but Eastern worked back and Miss M. Small scored. Otago swept downfield to the Eastern line, thrusting again and again at the Eastern goal. Miss Butler finally scored. On resuming after the interval things were looking bad for Otago till the forwards combined, and in . a pretty movement Miss Butler scored again. Miss D. Moir, the Otago left wing, sent in long shots which harassed Eastern and narrowly missed the goal on several occasions. From a penalty, the same player notched Otago’s sixth goal from a difficult angle. Miss H. M'Kissock, the Eastern centre-half, turned the tide, taking the play to Otago’s territory, where the latter was kept busy. From the resultant forward rush Miss K. Bond scored Eastern’s second goal. From now on Otago had the best of the game. The final score was:— Otago 6 goals, Eastern 2 goals. Otago attacked resolutely throughout and consequently the defence was not severely tested. The outstanding Otago players were Misses A. Mackie. D. Moir, O. Butler, M. Blagdon, and P. Hopkinson. Quite the reverse of the A team, Otago B was weak in attack, while the defence was very stubborn. The game was more even than the final scores indicated (Canterbury 7 goals, Otago B nil). The Otago girls did not combine to any marked degree, their inability accounting for the fact that there was no score. The Canterbury goals were scored by Misses J. Parsons, B. Millichamp (5), and M. Gudsell. TIMARU, August 30. To-day’s result's were:— Wellington 7, Bush 2. Southern 5, South Canterbury B -nil. Ruahine 4, South Canterbury A nil.Eastern A 5, North Otago 2. TIMARU, August 31. The tournament was continued in glorious sunshine. Heavy rain fell overnight. however, and one ground was unplayable. All the games in section I were being postponed till Tuesday, which is an off-day in that section. In section 11, Canterbury easily defeated but Ruahine had a hard fight against’ North Otago, who played a splendid game. The former is a more experienced side, and this enabled it to -win in a match which was full of exciting incidents. Results: —■ Canterbury 6, Rotorua nil. Eastern A 5. South Canterbury A nil. Ruahine 3, North Otago 1. TIMARU, September 2. OTAGO B v. EASTERN B. The game between Otago B and Eastern B at the Ladies’ Dominion hockey tournament proved spectacular to a degree. In the last quarter of an hour the score was 4 to 3 against Otago. The latter was pressing hard, but Eastern found an opening and the backs cleared to see the last goal shot. ... From the opening bully play went to the Otago twenty-five. The backs secured and took the ball downfield, but it was returned with long telling shots, Miss I, Johnston, the goalie, being called upon twice in succession to clear. The forwards took part in a good rush, but Eastern, led by Miss H. Crawford, came to Otago’s circle, where a good passing rush saw Miss M. Nicol shoot the first goal. With a task now set, Otago attacked strongly. Miss S. Vidal, with a speedy solo effort, transferred play from halfway to the Eastern twenty-five, where her shot went wide. From a long corner the Otago forwards secured, and a spirited encounter saw Miss R. Scott net. Otago kept up the pressure, the efforts being fruitless. Eastern gradually worked clear, and Miss V. Gray, who drove hard, finding the net. Otago kept up the attack. A few minutes later, after a pretty passing movement. Miss O. Butler scored.
