THE MINING INDUSTRY.
A GLOOMY PICTURE. WELLINGTON, September 2. Mr R. Semple returned to Wellington on Friday from the West Coast where he has been for the past fortnight representing the New Zealand Labour Party with Mr L. Glover (representing the Alliance of Labour). Messrs Semple and Glover were called upon by the miners to assist in negotiations with a view to settling a strike which had been in existence for 12 weeks at the Cascade Colliery, Westport. “ After several days of negotiation,” said Mr Semple, “w e were able to bring about a satisfactory settlement;” Mr Semple said that the outlook on the West Coast was very bad. There had been discharged from the Blackball mine 170 single men, and the Paparoa mine was practically closed down. The Millerton mine was working only four days a fortnight, and there ■were rumours of serious trouble. The outlook for the mining industry was gloomy.
