THE LEADING AVERAGES. INVITATION EXTENDED TO JUPP, LONDON, August 25. The averages of the leading players are as follow:— BATTING.

Staples is thirteenth, his figures being 2347 runs, 106 wickets, average 22.14, and Hammond is sixteenth, liaving taken 73 wickets for 1689 runs, an average of 23.13. It is understood that the Marylebono Club has asked Jupp whether he is prepared to join the English team. Jupp has intimated his willingness provided he receives reasonable notice. SPECIAL ARTICLE BY HOBBS. HAMMOND NOT A GREAT BOWLER, LONDON, August 22. Hobbs, in a special article, says: “ Despite his sensational performances against Surrev and Worcestershire Ham. mond should not be regarded seriously as a great bowler. In Australia he : would be an ordinary change bowler. I anticipate that hi s "best feats will bein batting and catching. He will probably made a lot of runs. There is no question that he is a remarkable catcher. He seems to take the balls almost off tile bat. He must have an eye like a hawk. His 10 catches at Cheltenham yesterday week was an extraordinary feat. His bowling, hou ever, ■ was less sensational, for there was a dusty wicket. Lancashire seems certain to win the county championship. Its batsmen have made some line scores, but I think the deciding factor in the county’s success is Macdonald’s bowling Without his performances I doubt whether Lancashire would be heading the list.” Macdonald is at present third on the list of county averages, ■with 165 wickets and an average of 18-58. Larwood and Freeman precede him. W. R. Hammond had a phenomenal success last year for Gloucestershire in 1926 he had been ill and unable to play, but a winter in South Africa did him much good. In May last year be equalled W. G. Grace's feat of scoring 1000 runs in the month. He scored 2522 runs in the season, and had an average of 72.05. He scored two centuries in the match against Surrey. He is a fine hitter, a stylist in method and a superb driver. He is also a good medium-pace bowler, and a brilliant fieldsman in the slips. Macdonald is the ex-Australian.
