BOXING

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. FORMATION OF RIVAL BODY DEPRECATED. AUCKLAND, August 23. The annual conference of delegates to the New Zealand Boxing Association was held to-day. Mr C. A. Craig presided. In his annual report, which was adopted, the president referred to the 'satisfactory progress made during the past year, particularly in regard to amateur boxing. There had been a steady growth of the sport, which was most gratifying. The balance sheet disclosed a satisfactory credit balance. The question of the insurance of boxers was brought up by Mr W. G. Talbot (Wellington), who put forward a comprehensive scheme by which the New Zealand Association would take its own risk. Each association would pay to three trustees 2 per cent, of the gross proceeds of every tournament until a fund of £2OO was accumulated. The scheme was adopted, and Messrs J. R. Simpson, W. G. Talbot, and J. W. Heenan were appointed trustees. The Wellington Boxing Association forthwith placed £lOO into the fund, and the Auckland and Dunedin Associations £5O each. -■ A remit from the Northern Boxing Association that associations should have the right of paying £2OO purses without applying for permission from the New I Zealand Council was brought forward by Mr W. R. Dervan. Mr W. G- Talbot (Wellington) suggested as an addition that the expenses, in addition to the purse, should not exceed £5O, and Mi- Dervan agreed to this. However, the representatives of the smaller associations did not favour the proposi--tion. They held that they were not in a position to pay over £l5O in purses, and had frequently lost the services of prominent boxers when the more wealthy associations had offered larger purses.—The remit was lost. A resolution deprecating the movement to set up a separate association to control amateur boxing was passed on the motion of the president. The meeting affirmed the principle that boxing, both amateur and professional, should be controlled by a citizens’ association for the love of sport, and not for pecuniary gain. The motion expressed the opinion that the existing unified control was in the best interests of both branches of the sport and of the public. If Parliament granted the petition of the so-called Amateur Boxing Union chaos would ensue, and the result would be the encouragement of cash amateurism and the introduction of the private promotor. The meeting urged the New Zealand Boxing Council to combat the attempt to alter the present control. The president referred to the success of .C. Morgan, the Wellington welterweight boxer, in winning his class at the Olympic Games, and securing the world’s amateur honours. It was decided to congratulate the Wellington Association on Morgan’s achievement. . It was also decided to act on the suggestion of Mr D. R. Hoggard, of the New Zealand Council, to establish a Morgan Cup, to be competed for annually in the welterweight class at the New Zealand championship tournament. It was decided to hold the next annual tournament at Greymouth, and according Mr A. Beban, of Greymouth, was appointed the next president of the New Zealand Association. Mr A. Craig • (Auckland), and Mr C. P. Agar (Christchurch) were elected vice-presidents.
