The necessity for the production of plenty of volume was brought forcibly before the notice of the competitors at the Gisborne competitions on a recent night (states the Poverty Bay Herald), when Mr Cyril Towsey, judge of the musical items, mentioned that during the afternoon he had extreme -difficulty in hearing some of the voices in a certain section. The majority, he said, had no voice at all. They appeared to be singing something, but not one word of what was being sung reached him in the dress circle. _ The characterisations were good, but this was of no use if he could not hear the songs.
