As the train carrying the excursionists to Otira the other day passed beside the upper reaches of the Waimakariri River, passengers were surprised to see what seemed to be a fall of snow, on one side of the train only (says the Christchurch Sun). They were puzzled, until somebody realised that there was a great deal of frost on the telegraph lines, and as the smoke and' steam from the engin® •touched' the wires, this dropped.
