COMPENSATION CLAIM.
SMALL AWARDS TO WIDOW AND MOTHER. AUCKLAND, August 2. Arising out of the death of James Horne Giles at Portland, a claim was made in the Arbitration Court by the widow for £3OO compensation, and by deceased’s mother for £lOO compensation. For the defence it was submitted that the widow was not entitled to compensation, as she had left her husband; and if she had received any money from him the amounts had been small;. She also had a good business, and her assets exceeded £l2OO. The court awarded £l5O to the mother and £5O to the widow.
