GORE COMPETITIONS.

SUCCESSFUL OPENING. GORE, May 8. The eleventh annual festival of the Gore Competitions Society was opened In the Princess Theatre yesterday. There was a large audience at the evening session, and a varied programme was contributed. Mr E. C. Smith (president of the Competitions Society) made a few opening remarks, and the festival was officially declared opened by the Mayor (Mr David M'Dougall). The judges are: Miss T. Sutherland (Timaru), dancing; Mr H. Ward (Timaru), elocution; and Mr Alfred Worsley (Christchurch), vocal and instrumental. The entries for the festival total 840, including a large number of competitors from Dunedin. Results:— HIGHLAND FLING, under 10.— Miss Winnie Voight (Gore), 70 points, 1; Miss Jean Paterson (Gore), 65 points, 2. Four others competed. .SWORD DANCE, 12 and under.— Miss Isabel Macdonald (Invercargill), 70 points, 1; Miss M. Lange (Gore), 68 points, 2; Miss B. Saul (Dunedin), 67 points, 3; Miss D. Al. Seven others competed. The judge stated that she had never previously given 100 marks for this dance, but had to do so on this occasion. The technique and character of the winner’s dancing had been perfect, and her performance was the finest she had ever witnessed. PIANO SOLO, under 12—Miss E. CONTRALTO SOLO (Test: “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal”). —Miss B. M. Pryde (Invercargill), 74 points, 1; Miss H. Roy (Dunedin), 72 points, 2’. Five others competed. The judge stated that all the competitors had taken the piece too slowly. The winner >vas the only one with a true contralto voice.

RECITATION, boys under 16.— Master D. Stewart (Invercargill), 96 points, 1; Master Bruce Jones (Dunedin), 97 points, 2. Three competed. The judge stated that the competitor who secured most points in this section had not secured the first prize because bis piece had not been suitable.

The judge stated that the winner had given the outstanding elocutionary performance of the evening, and had given quite an an artistic rendering of her piece. IRISH SONG (open).—Mr Samson competed: Miss Helen (Roy (Dunedin), Belcher (Dunedin), 81 points, 2. Also (Invervargill), 83 points, 1; Miss M. Miss C. Atkinson (Waipounamu), Mr A. J. The judge stated that the winner had a good voice, but was inclined to force some of his notes, making his intonation slightly faulty. His tone colouring and breath control were good. The judge stated that one or two of the competitors had given a very fine performance, so far as the acting was concerned, but had missed the import of the words. The winner was the only one who had observed the rule when giving an excerpt of not bowing to the audience. Her conception of the piece was good, but her breathing was at fault. Ten others competed. The Judge stated that the winner had given an intelligent reading of the piece, and her natural manner on the stage had helped her considerably. PIANO DUET, under 18. and Miss F. M. Baird (Invercargill), Eight others competed. This was an exceptionally good class, and was difficult to judge. The winner had given an exceptionally fine reading of the poem. The piece was a difficult one, with a note of pathos running through it, and this had been -well sustained.
