TAIERI-CREEN ISLAND.

INDUCTION SERVICE AT MOSGIEL. The induction of the Rev. A. L. Cantor to the cure of the parochial district of Taieri-cum-Green Island was celebrated at St. Luke’s, Mosgiel, on Thursday evening. The induction and laying on of hands was performed by Dr Richards (Bishop of Dunedin), who was assisted by Archdeason Fitchett, Canon Button, the Rev. S. J. Cooper, and the Rev.. W. A. Hamblett. Bishop Richards preached an appropriate sermon to one of the largest congregations that has ever been in St. Luke’s.

After the service a welcoming social was held in Walker’s Tea Rooms, where the Mosgiel Anglicans, as well as many from Green Island, had an opportunity of an hour’s friendly intercourse with their new vicar and his good lady. Mr E. 0. Taylor, on behalf of the vestry and the congregation, extended a warm and cordial welcome to both Mr and Mrs Cantor, and the former was assured of the hearty co-operation of the vestry in his new ministry. The Rev. R. Robertson (Baptists) and the Rev. C. Duncan ( Wesleyan) also extended fraternal greetings for their denominations to the newcomers. The Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr J. P. Walls), speaking on behalf of the citizens. endorsed the welcome extended by the other speakers. He expressed the hope that the life of both Mr and Mrs Cantor in the Taieri would be very pleasant. He assured them they would find the residents of an hospitable turn of mind, who would make them feel thoroughly at home in their new surroundings. The Rev. Mr Cantor, replying on behalf of the wife and himself, thanked the speakers for their cordial words of welcome, which he said would inspire him with an eager desire to give to his parishioners of his very best, at the same time pointing out that, although he was but an ordinary man, and not a superman, he felt sure that, with a spirit of give-and-take and mutual understanding between himself and his parishioners, his ministry would be fraught with spiritual good for all. During the evening musical items were rendered by Mr F. Brookes and Mrs Murray Wilson, whilst Master Norman Scurr charmed the company with two recitations.
