A visitor from England who was in Timaru recently and who is on a motor tour of New Zealand, said he had been given the impression, before leaving Home, that New Zealand roads were practically impassable for motor cars (says an exchange). He had been all through the North Island, and as far south as Dunedin, and, needless to say, had been pleasantly surprised when travelling over these “impassable” roads. Although constructional activity on seven large buildings in or about Queen street would seem to indicate the building trade in Auckland is brisk, a different aspect is revealed by the city building figures for the month of April and for the first four months of the year (says the Herald). Permits to erect new building and to alter and add to old ones were issued to the value of only £53,785 last month, the total being £113,668 lower than that for April of last year.
