COURSING NOTES.

By

Clarence

The “hat” trick is fairly common in cricket circles, but in coursing events, seldom does such an event occur—yet to Air “Bob" Cooper, of Westburn (Victoria), this honour fell last week. He was successful in winning three stakes out of four on the Craigburn enclosure, including the Dewar Cup. This event was keenly contested, but Air Cooper’s second season bitch, San Toy, led and defeated all her opponents in a convincing manner. Then he won an eight-day puppie stake with Westburn (a nice brindle pup), whilst his litter sister, Daisy Maid (also a brindle), annexed the bitch puppies’. Mr H. V. Foy. of Sydney, who has made several trips to New Zealand in connection with the Australasian Waterloo Cup, and who is at present in the Old Country, has sent to his Sydney kennels, a nice brood slut (white and brindle) named Dail Eireann Again. This is a good move, as top-notch brood sluts are as rare in Australia as in New Zealand.

Nancy Star, a New Zealand-bred slut, who was purchased by Air Leon Gordon, the actor, is being trained by Air H. Wyhoon, the Oakleigh trainer. All being well she will compete in the Victorian Waterloo Cup in July. At a committee meeting of the Otago Open Coursing Club it was decided to run the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup on June 1 and 3 (if dates are available). The licensed victuallers have subscribed towards a cup, and this will be supplemented by stake money. Full particulars will be advertised in the Otago Daily Times at a later date.

Air 0. R. Alarks, who has been judging the various open stakes with much success, has asked Mr J. Flynn, of South Dunedin, to judge the next meeting of the club, and Air Flynn has generously consented. Dog owners have every confidence in both judges, and are fortunate in having secured their honorary services.

At the annual meeting of the National Coursing Association of New Zealand Air B. S. Irwin was re-elected president, andMr H. Divers general secretary, with Air G. E. Price treasurer. Matters in connection with the forthcoming New Zealand Waterloo Cup, to be run. in July at Alasterton, under the control of the Wairarapa Club, was discussed. Air M. Freeney, of Frankton Junction (who so ably judged the last Waterloo Cup at Christchurch), was elected to judge the event again this year, whilst Air Caverhill, of Alasterton, was elected the slipper for the national fixture. It 'was also decided that a nomination for the Australasian Waterloo Cup, to be run in New South Wales next month, be taken up on behalf of the Dominion. Invercargill will run a £5 limit stake on the 19th inst.. and Dunedin will be represented by Air C. James’s Rapid Fire.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the National Coursing Asociation of New Zealand was held last evening. Air B. S. Irwin (president) occupied the chair, and there was a full attendance of delegates. The annual report and financial statement were adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Air B. Winchester.

The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —Patron, Air O. R Wise (Oamaru); president, Mr B. S. Irwin; vice-presidents—Alessrs T. A. Alexander (Woodlands), J. M’Kenna (Patea), W. Wellington (Christchurch); delegates— Alessrs N. Millier (Frankton Junction), 0. R. Marks (Invercargill), E. C. Price (Christchurch), F. Foster (Taranaki), Al. 11. Seddon (Waitara), C. James (Otago Open Club), T. Lee (Dunedin), H. L. Gallien (Patea). B. Winchester (Thames), and J. H. Thomson (Wairrapa); representatives to the Board of Control, Sydney—Alessrs R. C-oombes and M. Taylor; secretary, Air H. Diver's.

Nominations were received from a number of clubs for the position of judge and slipper for this year’s New Zealand Waterloo Cup, to be held at Masterton. The ballot resulted in the appointments of Alessrs M. Freeney, of Frankton Junction, as judge, and T. V. Caverhill, of Alasterton, as slipper.

It was resolved to take out a nomination in the Australasian Waterloo to be held at Sydney next month. The council also agreed to add £5 to the New Zealand Waterloo stake.
