“ The poachers have been having rather a good time,” said Mr G. Grover, at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society. Last year was a very bad poaching period owing to the rivers being so low. He advocated heavier stocking; 450,000 fry were not enough, for annual liberation. Nothing under 1,000,000 fry, and yearlings as well, would be sufficient. The Ripponvale Water Board wrote to the last meeting of the Vincent County Council stating that it had decided not to accept the Cromwell Development Company’s offer to sell them the water races and right (says the Cromwell Argus). Some of the reasons were that since negotiations started several had abandoned their properties, and that the valuations had dropped very considerably. The Chairman said the council had been put to some expense, and the settlers would have to bear this.
