There are evidently a good many old coins in circulation at the present time, some of them bearing dates that show they were minted long before Wanganui was placed on the map states the Chronicle). Two shillings dated 1816 and 1835 found their way into the city, while a number of others belonging to a later period have also been seen. When these old coins come into one’s possession, one does not like parting with them, but they somehow manage to disappear, in most cases a few days before pay day.
