FREEZING WORKS.
REDUCING NUMBER OF HANDS. AUCKLAND, May 1. Since the beginning of March the Mocwera, Westfield, Horotiu, and Southdown freezing works have been slackening off their operations, particularly so far as killing for export is concerned. It is estimated by one competent to judge the position that since that date some 500 butchers and general freezing workers have been placed on the labour market in the Auckland Province. Westfield, however, is employing as many men as the remainder of the works put together. Commenting upon the fact that 500 men would be placed on the unskilled labour market for the next eight months, an Auckland man who is in close touch with the freezing industry, expresses the opinion to-day that there was need for national undertakings in New Zealand to absorb the surplus labour durinj the winter months. It was uneconomic, he considered, to have a large number of ftieh who engaged in seasonal occupations producing nothing for a lengthy period.
