“Can you tell me,” asked a lady of broad Scots accent at a meeting of Grey Lynn householders, “ if teachers are supposed to have first aid at their finger ends? ” (reports the Auckland Star) While the chairman was endeavouring to grasp her meaning, a rugged voice broke in with the answer: “No, they are supposed to have castor oil there.” After the gathering had indulged in a good laugh, the Scots lady was informed that candidates for teachers’ certificates are required to have attended a certain number of classes in first aid instruction In doubting the efficacy of such training, the inquirer informed the meeting that when her child suffered an injury he was given no aid whatever.
