SWIMMING

DISSENSION IN AUCKLAND. THE TREASURER RESIGNS. AUCKLAND, May 2. For some time past there has been trouble in connection with the governing of the sport of swimming in Auckland. At a recent meeting the chairman (Mr J. Enwright) handed in his resignation as a result of differences of opinion regarding his 'actions- at the annual meeting of delegates to the New Zealand Swimming Council. Under pressure, however, Mr Enwright agreed to continue in office until the end of the present season. A recent diving competition held at the Regent Theatre has been the means of dreating further dissension, and as an outcome Mr C. A. Edenborough has handed in his resignation as treasurer of the association. When the matter of granting a permit to hold the diving competition first came before the Auckland Centre it was not looked upon at all favourably, but as it was pointed out that the Olympic funds might benefit members took a different view of the matter. The president and the secretary of the New Zealand Council would not at first approve of the proposal; but when the information wag conveyed to them that the Olympic funds would be swelled they gave their consent, but only so long as swimming and the Auckland Centre derived no benefit. Th Auckland Centre then gave permission for the holding of the competition, Mr Edenborough being the only delegate to oppose it, and to express“his disapproval of the action he handed in his resignation as treasurer and as delegate from the Waitemata Club. When Mr Edenborough’s letter came before the Auckland Centre at its last meeting it was taken in committee, as also was a frill discussion on it. A subsequent motion, that the matter be thrown open td the press, was defeated. Consequently Mr Edenborough has handed a copy of his letter of resignation to the newspapers. “ I have nothing to say except that I am finished with swimming in Auckland,” said Mr Edenborough.
