NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.
NO CAPPING CEREMONY IN CHRISTCHURCH. The proposal of the Canterbury College authorities to hold a capping ceremony this year has been vetoed by the New Zealand University. Last year the ceremon / lapsed, and Canterbury College hoped to revive it this year. All arrangements were in train, and all that was needed was what was regarded as the formal consent of the New Zealand University. This was not forthcoming, and in its place came a definite ban. All that can be done now to honour this year’s graduates is to hold some kind of reception, and this may be done next term. The University Council, which, under the new legislation, alone may confer degrees, does not meet till the end of May, and students will again experience the’ unique thrill of reaping the reward of four or five years’ hard work through the post. Meantime the undergraduates, undaunted, are pursuing their activities in connection with the capping carnival, which will include the annual revue for three nights and their procession in the city. The diploma ball will probably take place next term. GRADUATION CEREMONY IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, April 30. The report that the proposal of the Canterbury College authorities to hold a capping ceremony this year has been vetoed by the New Zealand University should not be taken,” says the Hon. George Fowlds, president of the Auckland University College, “ to mean that no ceremony will be held in Auckland this year. Although the recent amending Act of the New Zealand University provides that degrees can actually be conferred only by the New Zealand University Council, there will probably be held in Auckland this year a graduation ceremony resembling closely the usual ceremony of conferring degrees. The date lias not yet been decided upon.”
