A welcome fighter of New Zealand’s pests is indicated by the discovery of a blackberry destroying insect which has attacked the growth of that much-detested shrub in the Wairoa district (reports the Napier Daily Telegraph). The discovery was made by Mr W. A. Neale, a retired Waikaremoana farmer, now residing at Wairoa,’ who states that a whole hedge appears to have been attacked. The insect makes its homo on the under-side of the leaf, whence it commences its work. The leave® appeared to be quite riddled by its activities, which, however, did not stop here, but continue to attack the fruit in the green stage, thus arresting the prolific spread for which the blackberry is noted. A Masterton gardener last week informed a Wairarapa Daily Times representative that an extraordinary growing season had been experienced. There were second crops of apples, while beans and such like had been growing lately as well as in the spring.
