The large canvas executed and presented to the Ashburton borough by Miss Ethel S. Jones, of Auckland, and formerly of Ashburton, has been received by the Borough Council (says the Guardian) . It is a large framed oil painting, and depicts one of the first sod whares erected in the county. It was painted by Miss Jones in 1909. The picture should be a valuable acquisition to the historical gallery in the municipal chambers. A drover in the vicinity of Woodlands on Wednesday afternoon had rather an unpleasant experience which he is not at all eager to repeat , (reports the Southland Times). He was engaged in shepherding some sheep along a road when one, straying from the flock, encountered a broken power line. ihe drover in an attempt to save the animal, seized it and immediately received a shock of 230 volts. He managed, however, to drag the sheep further away and broke the contact. At this juncture the sheep was, unfortunately, beyond human aid.
