The Christchurch City Council has gone into business as a retailer of potatoes (says the Sun). A good crop has been raised on the reserve at Innes road, and a goodly number of orders has been received in the council office from buyers. There is at least one person in Nelson, who, though suffering from straitened finances, manages to maintain a plentiful supply of cigarettes (states the Nelson Evening Mail). “During the evenings,” said he, “ I just take a walk to one of the more secluded of the city reserves, and sit down on a seat beside some loving couple. It is seldom very long before I am offered a packet of cigarettes to betake mystelf elsewhere.” He mentioned that he had a small portmanuteau at home, half-filled with “ smokes ” gained in this way.
